The reality is many 'low income' people are not just in cities, but in rural areas, not served by buses or public transport. They do not have options of traveling to 2 or 3 markets to get that cheap produce, then driving to the next place for discount bread, and so on.

Ever try walking with 2 feet of snow on the ground? Carrying your 'healthy produce' in your shopping bag? How much can you walk and carry? This is very time consuming as well.

Here I noticed that the one 'market' near the sidewalks in a nearby town charges more for less (how it works in low income places). They figure the folks have no choice and HAVE to shop there.

Yep, as a kid I lived in Illinois, and had a paper route. In the winter, I had to walk through snow up to my knees to get the route done. Just to get from MY house to where the route was. The town didn't pay to have sidewalks shoveled alongside the Main Street, just for the streets to be cleared, so they pushed the drifts into where the sidewalks would have been.

Even as a kid, I was carrying at least 65 pounds of newspapers there...maybe a 1/2 mile to a mile away from home.

And that money got turned over to pay for necessities at home...and we still didn't eat every day.

I'm sorry to hear about it TK.

So many people 'with money' have no clue how rough it is for others.

Simply saying 'cut down' is not enough. Not everyone lives in a cheap area where you can shut off the heat, get 50 cent loaves of bread (just an example) and fresh fruit at a discount. Where I live the 'discount' bread outlet still charges over $1.50 per loaf. Fruit, though grown here, is still not 'cheaper' than a box of 'snack cakes' (farmers have to live, too).

I used to say, why do people live in the ghetto? Why don't they just move? But you need money to move, a job to go to and a place to afford while settling in. While we are a more mobile nation, the chance to pick up stakes and move on is not always an option.

Housing costs are crazy.

Has anyone mentioned continually pinching pennies can become draining? When you worry about money all the time it's not good for your health. I don't say go crazy but what is life if you can't occasionally get a pizza out or see a movie?

I don't know what people with a lot of kids do. (low income people, I mean)

You know what else is funny? People who say, "Get educated."

Everything along the route of "education" but OJT/life experience, or public libraries costs MONEY.

Yeah people online really don't consider other people's situations, or even the possibility of other situations other than their own. "If you aren't doing things the way I would or can, then you are doing something wrong" mentality.

Its irritating and a little funny (the stupidity of it) at the same time.

If you live in Po-dunk, Iowa with a population of 30, you don't have a lot of options.

It is just a fact. Things are not the same for everyone. You have to make your own luck.

Prepare chicken thighs or drumsticks, make tuna cakes (I have a great cheap recipe) I do this. It's ok to eat eggs and such, but ramen noodles etc are filled with sodium etc. You can make cheaper, healthier soup in a crock pot. Go to the library and get easy recipes or online. You have to also practice preventive health. Health care is the highest cost.

Another thing is to take a bus or walk. I have never had a car and get anywhere I want, plus I am in good shape. Cars are a big waste of money.

Good food suggestions but I have to ask on one: here at least multigrain pasta (which my kids prefer over white/bleached) is nearly 2x the price of the "cheap stuff".
