Inside or outside sales jobs minus the pressure, sales jobs like regular employment, hotel sales jobs, small salary plus commission structure, import export companies, pharmaceutical sales
As a salesmen there is always pressure to sell sell sell. Your life depends on it. Sales is in most cases a very very high paying job but only if you have a commission or a small salary plus commission structure. Stay away from sales jobs that are salary or hourly only. If your going to sell then sell something that pays a nice commission plus bonuses.
Try a new car salesmen. A good car salesman make well over $60K and after a couple years you can earn 6 figures. New car dealers dont care much about your work history. They all train you. STAY AWAY from any car salesmen job ad that does not give you the name of the dealer. It is a scam. Check out my post from a couple days ago. Post #4.
An inside sales job is a job where customers come to you by way of your owner or managers advertising, promoting, marketing etc. You still are free to bring in some of your own business. An example is you sitting at your desk waiting for a customer to come in so you can sell them that appliance or car or TV.
An outside sales job is one where you are totally on your own. You find customers by knocking on doors, cold calls, word of mouth, networking etc. Outside sales usually pay the highest commissions. An example of this is you walking the streets with hurricane damaged roofs and knocking on doors trying to convince them why your roofing company is better then the 100 others who already knocked on their door saying the same thing.
A new late career change to sales is great for some one who worked in the same field for many many years but are getting to old to do the physical work anymore. This is an ideal situation to sell something you know much about.
Great, thanks for all the info..It seems there is a reason why it is a very high paying job - the stress! I am currently in a very high stress job, but it is not sales, it's just a desk job but it's stressing me out because I don't like to be confined or put in a "solitary confinement" (aka the cubicle).. I am looking to break free and make a career change. I am very driven and love talking to people but am not necessarily called talkative. Thanks again..
If you like the idea of selling and being out of the office, find something that you are passionate about and sell the sh_t out of it.
I've done sales in a import/export company...in the office every other Monday which sucked because even though you are producing they demanded more..more..more from you at the meeting. God they would take your blood if they could. Great money I must say. Not worth my sanity.
Went on to indoor sales....hated the office. Felt trapped. Death.
Now I'm doing something I like, real estate. Work as hard as I like or take off as much as I like. The harder you work, the more you make.
Key is, if your changing your job, do something you like. If you like what you're doing, you'll be great at it.
The health care industry is booming. Maybe you can become a drug pusher....pharmacutical sales that is. Great money, meet educated people...That's my next job.
Thank you..What you're saying does make sense. Selling what one loves or knows a lot about makes a big difference..It is hard I think to fake enthusiasm so the more one knows about the product/service, the easier it gets. I don't have much background in Sales, but I would assume there are some things that are easier to sell than others. For example, selling a gym membership is easier than a tractor trailer from Caterpillar. For one, I don't even know a thing about heavy construction equipment but my friend's boyfriend is a salesman for them and he makes a GREAT living.
I agree....the healthcare industry is worth looking into, but am not sure about the Pharmaceutical Sales Rep you mentioned. I don't think it is easy to get those jobs without a Science degree/background, which makes sense to me since I will need to know a little about chemistry or biology. I checked with Eli Lilly and Pfizer a few years ago and they required a Bachelor's Degree in a Science field (some even needed a Master's). I am thinking more along the lines of medical device sales but I will have to research. All in all thanks for all the info. I am jealous of you that you're now doing what you love to do. I hope to one day have the peace of mind you seem to have. I tell you...there is nothing worse like being confined in an office cubicle for 8 hours, 5 days a week! I am desperate to change my career and keep telling myself: Change is coming! LOL
Sounds to me like what you want to be is an MC, or a greeter or some such. You want to be social on the job, but not do the "dirty work" of making a sale. You want to be out there campaigning... "Hey I'm a great person", shaking hands and all that.
Umm... try becoming a celebrity?
Are you always this funny? It amazed me that you never met me and yet, you hit the nail in the head! I mean...it is not my fault that I am a people person or that smiling/shaking hands come naturally to me! I have to say that I got scared when you said "dirty work of making a sale". Obviously, I am new to Sales but can you summarize a bit about what you mean by that?
SALES IS STRESSFUL! There are no such things as a little to no pressure sales job. Your job does depend on quotas and sales. Seek another industry if pressure sales is not your thing. There are plenty of jobs that don't require to sell, but you will have to work behind a desk.
No job is stress-free of course. My current job is full of stress but it's not in Sales. I guess the fact that I am confined and forced to deal with annoying/loud people is suffocating me. I like to be out and about, making and closing deals. I am very driven but not necessarily agressive. I will do anything to not work behind a desk or in an office. At my current job, I have used every excuse imaginable to not be in the office or sit at a desk. When I am confined like that, I become like a little tiger. I did turn down another job last week when I learned I will be sitting in an office for 8 hours!!!! Thanks for the info..
I think you are mixing up sales with being in customer service.
You might look in that direction
