TV Anchorman Prepares to Become a Veterinary Technician
ABC News: Finding a New Career After Being Laid Off
(Be sure you scroll down to read the whole story.)
I had never heard of Ernie Bjorkman but I LOVE his attitude that came out in this story.
I'm rooting for Ernie.

I saw this last night on 20/20.
It makes me wonder how much the anchormen and anchorwomen on our local news get paid. I would think the bigger the city, the bigger the salary.

I watched the show too. I was almost (almost) shocked to hear what he made. One of the most closely guarded secrets in the world is what news people make. Imagine making a quarter mil for working maybe 15 minutes in the morning and 15 at night? Almost as good as pro athletes.
I have a real hard time giving him and especially her any sympathy having to downsize to something close to what the average Joe has to endure every day. I do give him credit for the new path he chooses.
I wish them well.
The whole show was great. Especially the idea of posting everyones salary on the board in the lunch room.

I'm sure there's a lot more work than the 30 minutes we see them on tv but yeah, they are paid quite a bit.
It was nice to hear him say it was humbling. One would think that he had a nice retirement fund or savings fund.
I know they said their savings was pretty much gone but eh...if I was making that much, I wouldn't be buying a huge home or a vacation house. I'd be putting it in CDs and finding ways to invest.
Sure I'd still take vacations but do I need a vacation HOME? I think not.
To each their own though.
The thing about college was somewhat shocking. When they said 40% of people said they wouldn't go back to college.
I liked that they encouraged more people to go to a community college or trade school. I think depending on what trade you get, there is good money to be made for doing manual labor. I've never looked down on people who do manual labor, in fact, I admire them. I know I couldn't do it.

Im with ya. But you know many people live by what they make. They save little. But you mention vacation. Their primary home was only worth $450K. Did you see their 2nd home? A log cabin mansion up in the Colorado mountians !!! Who needs a vacation when you have that?
And the piece on college was fasinating. I agreed with the whole thing. College ain't worth the price. I always been a big supporter of trade schools. Whataya learn in college anyway? Nothing needed in the real world. Im over 50 and still have not seen a need for that stupid algebra crap. Man if that ain't a waste of time. I know college kids who come in looking for a job bragging about their scores. Yea they can add letters but once they walk outside those school doors for the last time they are not even capable of explaining a can opener. But they can add letters up.

I'd much rather take lots of vacations with the money they used for that vacation home. I don't think I saw the vacation home but I'll look at the video in a few minutes. I could use that money and go to Australia, France, India, Germany, United Kingdom, South Africa, Spain, Brazil, etc.
I'm going to a community college now and some people think I am crazy considering the grades I made in high school and all that jazz. "You're too smart for that." Why spend twice as much money relearning the things I learned in high school?
I think some of the things I learn will come in handy with my future job but I doubt History of Civilization and American History will be necessary for my job.
I just worry about my friends who are shelling out the big dough for art schools and those who want to major in Anthropology and things like that.
There are the lucky few who land jobs with those majors but eh...I'd much rather focus on the ones who don't.

Oh I agree with everything you said. And good luck in the community college. I did that stint much later in life. I had a god time as one of the oldest in my classes but I think seeing older people in community college is getting more of the norm these days.
