In many other countries, everywhere you go there are street vendors. They will sell everything from clothes, to food they make, to trinkets and jewelry, to sea shells that they just collected from the ocean.

The US should allow this. Similar to what you would see in China or Korea. If there is a little space, allow someone to rent that space out and do their thing there. It would allow a person to be an entrepaunuer if they choose. And if they go unemployed (which is happening big time these days) then they can still go out and work.

America needs to embrace the culture of street vendors. What do you think?

I agree 100%.

Just one of the many reasons we should all strive for limited government, controlled governmental spending and more individual freedoms.

Unfortunately it appears that socialism is gaining popularity in this country, especially with obama's infrastructure spending plan. Which is essentially just another special interest bailout where a few million peasants will get to eat the scraps that trickle down to them in the form of low paying jobs.

People love to believe that they'll get something for nothing!

I agree, jobs today are TERRIBLE, and not going to get any better soon. Street vending sounds like a lucrative business. In my town, there are many food vendors on my street corner. Might as well buy me a truck and start a business like that.

Sorry, I disagree.
Ever go to NY and be bothered by hawkers with their crap and their "Two dollah, two dollah?" pleas.

No, I don't want the USA to look like some market town in Ethiopia.

Hmm...I also agree 100% and I'm a socialist! So there!

Anyway, I think foreign countries are so much more interesting because of the street vendors. I'd love to see more of it in the US.

Of course, it's not a "US" decision....it has to do with city ordinances. Each city would have to decide on their own to allow this sort of thing. But essentially you could have a big flea market/farmer's market in the downtown.

Yea but that would still suck to have it all in one location. Some businesses are better off just standing on the corner. Out here in CA we have every street vendor ONLY selling flowers. Occasionally fruit but that is it! I would love to have them sell something like bottled drinks or chips. Sounds like that would be lucrative than just selling flowers.

I guess the city would have to issue permits to make sure it doesn't get out of control (ie. five vendors on street corner or intersection.)

lol, socialism doesn't even work. It sounds GREAT on paper. Everyone gives their best ability and everyone is offered health insurance and other benefits. However what happens is that everyone just becomes lazy. Meanwhile all the services you do get are substandard and the leaders are profiting greatly off the system. The free market is what gives the best value for consumers, it drives prices down and rewards those who provide the best value to customers. Often times in the US the free market gets blamed for the problems that are caused by socialistic policies. For example, health care is expensive because of government socialism and regulation. Everyone in this country would have health insurance if the hospitals didn't charge an arm and a leg to visit.

The only reason people like socialism is because they see, "oh the government is going to take care of me." In fact, the opposite happens. Just look at Cuba, former USSR and all the other socialist countries out there.

Who ever said street vendors were not allowed in America? Most big cities have those clowns clogging up the sidewalks or taking up parking spaces doing just what the previous poster said. Too dolla too dolla.

Look at NYC. 60 Minutes did an under cover special on those street vendors. They hire homeless people who have not washed their hands in 10 years and they roll those big pretzels right on the sidewalk. The show got it all on film. NY fired 80% of their city health inspectors due to budget cuts. You want to eat from those roach coaches you will pay the price when your sitting on the toilet all day.

Only thing worse then those street vendors are those kiosks in the mall who squirt disgusting perfume on you without your permission.

Killer: I see your point about location. I don't have strong preferences one way of the other. As for socialism, I'm not going to debate that here cause that's not the point of the thread. But....Cuba and the former USSR aren't socialist, they're communist. Big difference.

DesertSun: I think you're missing the point. Yes, some cities allow them but only with permission of the city. And often with very strange conditions. For example, in DC you have to buy the food cart (often a $5-10,000 cost) before you can apply for a license to use it. And even then, the city may not grant the license. Who's willing to pay that much money for a food cart and risk having the city turn them down? The OP is suggesting we do away with (or perhaps lessen) these sort of restrictions.

you're kidding right? the US spends more per capita on health care than any nation in the world. So according to you, countries like Sweden (with their generous maternity leave, vacation, health care, etc) and Switzerland, Germany , France, Briton etc are LESS socialistic than the US? It's precisly their gov'ts which are not in bed with the insurance companies, big pharma, and hospitals that keep costs down. Why are so many meds between 30 and 60% cheaper in Canada? Why are there currently generic versions of common meds available in Canada but not in the US?

everybody might be able to afford health care if it didn't cost literally 5-6 times more to get a broken arm x-rayed, set, and cast in the US as it does in Belgium. Do you think Belgium is a 3rd world country and the healthcare is 5-6 times poorer as in the US? There are probably some Americans that think that considering how insular most are. The people who say healthcare is too expensive are basing the cost of it on the current system which is actually very inefficient. Medicare's average admin cost is 4%. Private insurance companies are typically 20-50%. Don't tell me the gov't can't do anything efficient or cost effective. That is a conservative lie.

in regards to Cuba, in 1952 when Castro took over and for many years thereafter they were subsidised to the tune of over 7 billion a year from the USSR. Their health statistics at that time were comparable with the US. Still to this day their infant mortality is better than the US. Pretty embarrassing considering the difference in money available. Comparing the US to a small island country that imports over 70% of it's food ravaged by 2 recent hurricanes isn't a legit reflection on the bloated US system. If the US can't kick Cuba's a** well............
