Default Nurse wants to work at home

I know. I know. I have a recession proof job.
As a travel nurse we know that even the nursing industry has been hit badly. Hospital closings, layoffs and hiring freezes.
But to go a step beyond this I have to confess... after 20 plus years I am sooooo burned out!

I am emotionally, physically exhausted and even though I have a great paying travel position the hours (for me) are horrible and have negatively impacted my personal life as well as impacted me negatively in the emotional and physical realm.
I am so tired of being a slave to the system and being treated horribly.
Mandatory OT, horrible nurse -patient ratios, etc
To me an employer-employee relationship is just that... A RELATIONSHIP and I am tired of being married to an abusive employer.
Ok now that I have vented let me just ask if anyone out there knows of anything I can either
#1 do at home
#2 start my own business

Or any other "think outside the box" ideas.
I know I probably seem crazy ... especially in this economy and also considering the fact that I do have considerable financial responsibilities but I am exhausted to the max!

I have read some of the "work at home" threads. I have looked into MLM companies.
I simply do not know which way to turn or what is legitimate.
Any ideas or help for me and others who may read this thread will be appreciated.

Go to the websites of insurance companies (Aetna, United and Humana). They have a couple of work-at-home positions for nurses. Your primary responsibility is to call on patients over the phone who have signed up for their Disease Management programs. These positions are Care Management positions, so it shouldn't matter where you live.

Good luck.

Agree that Care Manager positions in HMO's might work.

But also try those insurance companies that offer "value added" services to members/employees. My particular employer offers a health & wellness program, part of which is the availability of a nurse for advice 24/7. I'm sure they're all at their homes and not sitting in offices.

You get calls like:
"Does pizza contain carbs?"
"My blood sugar is 550, should I go to the ER?"
"I have this funny spot on my arm, should I call 911 or make a doctor's appointment?"
"I just walked around the block. I'm 320 lbs and it's the first time I've exercised in 11 years. My heart is beating real fast, is that normal?"

Thank you. Both great ideas... But it doesnt necessarily have to be in nursing. Any work at home jobs where I can support my financial obligations and have freedom of movement.
Hmmm sales perhaps?

Hmmm sales perhaps?

My wife left a fantastic well paying sales job, working from home, to go to nursing school. She graduates next December. A few years after that I'll be retired, she will have a few years of experience, and we will hit the road as traveling nurse. Sort of the reverse of you.

As to her sales job...

Positives:
-She had a talent for sales. She could sell ice to the Eskimos and sand to the Arabs. This translated into high paychecks.
-She made her own schedule, more or less.

Negatives:
-Although she had a office in our home, she was rarely there. Maintaining the level of sales demanded she be out calling on customers all the time. Gone 2-3 days at a time, sometimes weeks at a time. Her territory eventually covered five states.
-When she was home, she was working. Day, night, weekends, you name it. Constant followup required to close sales. She was no different than other salespeople in her company. She was always on the phone with them nights and weekends working on deals.

Of course, that was just her experience with that one company. I'm sure others may be less (or more) demanding.

Well, what if you do not have sales experience?
I would love to try to do something a bit different but not sure if anyone out there would give me the opportunity.
Any suggestions for work at home companies that will give someone a chance or sales positions that will take someone with little to no experience?
Thanks

My wife didn't either. It turns out she was a natural at it. She went to work for a company that she was a customer of in her prior job. Their salesperson was her "in".

I have no specific companies to give you. Search this forum. There are several threads on working from home.

Maybe per diem home health? Depending on where you live and if they pay per visit, you can make good money and work less hours than a normal 40/week. Even if a regular F/T position, you're much more independent vs. hospital work. You do have alot of paperwork, but can do most at home. It would depend on the company--even hospices have home care if that's of interest to you.
Who wouldn't want to hire a nurse like yourself with so much experience? Good luck to you.
