I was just wondering if anyone started as a receptionist/office assistant and got promoted to another position in the office, or remained as receptionist forever?
I've been home with my kids for the past three years, but come Sept. plan to go back to work. Before, I was a receptionist in a doctor's office. There was no way to get promoted, since I wasn't going to become a doctor , and it was a very small office. But what about in a bigger office? Anyone moved up, or is it phones/coffee forever?

I think you'd have better luck finding a job as an administrative assistant than as a receptionist.

Oh, yes, in the legal field it is very very common for the receptionist to move to a legal secretary, paralegal or accounting office position. It's very rare to have a career receptionist.

Not without admin experience. We just had an admin spot open up at my company, every resume with no admin experience got tossed (there were over 100 resumes submitted!).

OP, I've seen 2 receptionists promoted in the past 5 years I've been with my company. What I'd suggest is offering to take on "floater" work for departments. That's what these receptionists did, helped out other depts with overflow admin work, and then when a spot opened up, they were promoted.

One of the good things about being a receptionist is, you'll get to know EVERYONE in the company, which is key when a new position opens up.

Hey there I got promoted from a recept to an admin a very long time ago and would be still there if we had not moved . However I have had more opps as an admin than a receptionist and would reccomend that you look for an admin position rather than just receptionist . yes one of the good things about being a receptionist is that you get to know everyone and they will see how you act and your demeanor and you will hear about new opportunities within the company . good luck to you .

I used to work for the federal government and I've definitely seen receptionists get promoted to higher positions.

I used to work for a major bank and there were administrative assts that would get promoted to analysts. I also knew one admin who went into HR as a generalist too. I don't think I've heard of a receptionist getting promoted though, mostly admins.
