The company I used to work for wouldn't hire ANYONE who had a violent felony conviction. It wasn't our rule, it was our insurance companies rule!

Other convictions were case-by-case and had nothing to do with the color of a persons skin. Over 50% of our workforce was black.

ummmm.......

I don't post a lot, but that was too good for me to pass up. I worked with black convicted felons and we used algebra. Looking at my desk, I can't identify one thing on it that probably didn't use algebra, or more complex math to design.

I also am a felon, but I'm white. I'm glad I'm not black things would harder for me, but I know a black twice convicted felon sex offender (thats right 2 sex charges, 15 or so years apart) that has been out of prison less than 6 months who works maitinence for a large apartment complex. Black felons get jobs, period.

not because of black & male, but bek an employment decision needs to be made undistracted by black & male.
people want to talk about skin tone and gender they rarely want to talk about behavior which they quickly dismiss as not an issue at all.
as to black business owners, i am no stranger to the big city, yeah they will hire you however if you show any attitude-- you know the stuff that got you in the can-- they will dump you so fast you will get whiplash. lots of black biz owners hire white people btw, that is what makes them good biz people they dont color code.

Looks like you are part of the problem. Your accusations are racist in themselves. Similar to me saying Hmmm, someone stole my radio from the car, ironically a black man on the corner was carrying a radio, Hmmmmm!

I read your story. I'm sure you are a decent guy who made one dumb mistake. If the politicos in this country were allowed only one mistake before being jailed then we could rid America of the real criminals in Washington.

You keep plugging and you will succeed. But for the record, algebra does not have any use in our society except if you are an Algebra teacher. But what they teach, no one needs to know.

Hey good luck to ya man.............

As a high ranking business executive, in my 35 year career as an executive, I hired ex-cons three times. One was black, one white, and one was mexican. I tried this three times. Each time the worker had the knowledge to do the job. The workers also had the motivation. However, they had neither the interpersonal skills, nor the personal drive to perform adequately. After having to fire them, each one was worse than the previous, I concluded that I shall never again hire an ex-con. I don't care what race he is. Nor do I care about his education, his societal status, or his age. I just will never again allow my other staffers nor myself to go through the problems again.

However, I do think it is wrong to arbitrarily refuse to give a young black male employment, especially if he has a non-violent criminal record. Most young black men are in prison due to non-violent crimes unlike Caucasian criminals. This is where the term "the white man putting us down" comes from because most small business owners are white, and most of them would not hire a convicted felon who is black.

Most advisor's refer young black men to relocate to cities like Atlanta, DC area and other cities in the south if they want to change their lives. Cities like Atlanta have many small business owners who are black, and believe it or not they are more likely to take a chance on hiring a black man with a felony record.
Not trying to stir up anything here, but I am bringing this up because I work in the corporate world and for a fortune 500 company. I started my career in Atlanta, and I was able to move up the corporate ladder in only 8 months due to great reviews that were given by upper level management there, and most of the senior managers and executives in the Atlanta office were black. My job required me to relocate and I was in a great position even though I was basically in an environment where I was the only black male and outside it was predominantly white too. I like what I did at the time however I had aspirations to move up again. Two recruiters for upper level management were interested in my resume, I was like I am going to be an executive this quickly yet they had to ask the individuals who I reported too with for reviews. Apparently whoever I reported to gave me mediocre reviews twice, and I will tell you they were not black. Isn't it ironic....???

I also don't feel appreciated for my hard work as I was in Atlanta and I also believe I am not taken seriously. Yet I am being compensated really well for a young black male in his 20's, so stop complaining friends say. Even though I am employed, and I am pretty sure many people out there would not mind doing my job I sometimes tell myself that "I would not mind getting laid off". I do not think it will happen, but if it does at least it would force me to go back to a city that is predominantly black, and either start up my own business or go back to school to work on a masters program focusing on education.

The bottom line is that I would rather be happy than disgusted and disappointed. I can somewhat relate with the many young black men going through these difficult times, because I am feeling it first hand in the corporate world in what I believe is called the "glass ceiling effect", but I guess I will swallow my pride for now and just see what happens.
I've heard a few studies done, in various cities where whites with a criminal record were more likely to be hired (by the companies done in the survey) than blacks with a clean record.

You apparently have never visited citigroup. Several departments are fun by black African males. Don't say "companies don't want to hire black men at all".

Have you noticed our President of the United States?

Stop drinking from the Piti punchbowl! Most of us are trying to ignore race, but yet it keeps getting brought up. If you don't want to be treated in a racist way, quit mentioning race. It's the criminal background that probably is not getting you hired

holy crap, the thing everyone is overlooking is people,no matter who,all make mistakes, some learn from them, other's don't.To be judgemental of said situations is beyond racism,or any other kind of -ism there is.In my line of work,i have worked with a lot of the best and brightest, with and W/O convictions, but then again,in my line of work,we measure a man on what he can do,not what he did.

We go into people's homes. I could never hire a felon.
