I never took originals with me on interviews. Now I was a software/network admin person so I didn't have original artwork or something similar but I did know one professional photographer who had samples of his work that was overprinted so that it was not usable as final work. When I started keeping pictures of network rack installations I had done or supervised I had them overprinted as well as removing some sensitive network information from the pictures before including them in my resume/portfolio. But the originals always stayed at home and only copies were taken with me when going on an interview or even project reviews. No one got the master copies.

That's nothing! I just realized I replied to a thread from 2009 and it's 2018.

Once you get the portfolio back, OP. Invest some time in putting it online. Do a web search for "online portfolio" if you don't already have a web site you can use to put your materials online.

Once it's online, you'll never have to take the originals to an interview. If you submit the link with your application, your potential employers can see it before they see you.
