An article in the Los Angeles Times this morning that seems to back up some of the thoughts about entitlement by some generations . . .

"For the 'funemployed,' unemployment is welcome"

How nice for them. Hope it works out the way they want it to. I'm off to toil at my little part-time gig in just a bit.

Wow, entitlement indeed.

Having had a huge salary, you can afford to do things like job hunt for the first week (!) get discouraged and hang out at a golf course the next week as a pick me up until you find that job you want. You also get to refer to unemployment as "time off" and not worry about basic needs like housing. Job hunting is just so strenuous when you're have that large bank account to deal with. This just seems so ill fitting when millions ppl are struggling in this economy.

It also reminds me of classmates who wanted to leave college to "discover themselves". That was good for them i guess, I just knew I could never have that luxury.

Some of them are going to have a very difficult time reentering the workplace as their skills begin to get rusty.

A number of the people referenced in the article quit their jobs, which means they aren't on unemployment. If they can afford to take time off without being on the dole, good for them. I don't see how it is a sense of entitlement as much as a decision on how to spend the resources they have at their disposal. If you are receiving unemployment, though, I think you should be actively looking for work.

I would also suspect that these folks represent a pretty small percentage of the people who are out of work.

I had the opportunity to do this about 4 years ago... I worked for General Motors and they were offering voluntary buyouts. I wanted to try something new and have 6 paid months to find something perfect... and it was a self-congratulations for finishing my MBA and JD and working fulltime throughout. It was a nice little break and I would do it again in a heartbeat.... but maybe not in this economy I did use the time to search for a new, amazing job (which I didn't quite find... there's always next time LOL)... and travel/explore the world/relax!

Sometimes you have to take some time off, but it's not like the focus of the article are those who got canned and are struggling. You think that Funemployment will turn into OhCrapIHaveNoMoney-employment for many that do this without adequate savings, or for too long and drain all their money.

I did this for 5 months or so.

Funemployment is great!
But it can't last forever.
