TOWNSHEND, Vt. – For weeks, Greg Noel roamed the spine of the Green Mountains with a handheld GPS unit, walking dirt roads and chatting with people as he helped create a map of every housing unit in the United States.
_The 9.4 percent May unemployment rate is based on 14.5 million Americans out of work. But that number doesn't include discouraged workers, people who gave up looking for work after four weeks. Add those 792,000 people, and the unemployment rate is 9.8 percent.
Any dumbass that gave up looking after four weeks shouldn't be counted, because they obvious ahve no inclination to work.

_The official rate also doesn't include "marginally attached workers," or people who have looked for work in the past year but stopped searching in the past month because of barriers to employment such as child care, poor health or lack of transportation. Add those 1.4 million people, and the unemployment rate would be 10.6 percent.
Even if the economy was great they wouldn't be working due to their childcare/transportation/health problems. They shouldn't be counted as unemployed, as they are unemployable.
Employment in VT is a joke. It was a joke before the recession and continues to be.
Please go to the Vermont forum and read other peoples' opinions, not just mine. Seriously. Working for $10/hr is the norm as a starting salary IF you can get a job.
It's one of the most gorgeous states in the country but the only ones doing well are doctors and trust fund babies.

If a couple has $10 an hour jobs can they afford to buy a home?
A couple with a joint income of $42K could afford a condo or smaller home that needed some work in much (not all) of VT. Another popular option for lower cost housing in Vermont seems to be a mobile or manufactured home on your own land that's permanently affixed with several outbuildings and ofter sunrooms built on. I've seen them in good condition on multiple acres of land just outside of Burlington for under $100K.

TY Annerk. That's much better than what you could get where I live with 2 $10/hour incomes (which is NOTHING affordable to buy and even difficult to rent anything decent).
