Hello. It's been decades since I've last looked for a job. Well, pretty much. I never used a resume but times have changed and for many kinds of jobs you seem to pretty much need one. I'm just wondering. If you are considering jobs such as janitorial, or dishwasher, or going to a temp agency such as Manpower for light industrial labor assignments, is a resume expected or should you just go in and fill out an application? Thanks.
A resume is needed even for a waiter or factory worker. I'm thinking about getting into the business of making resume website for people. I probably also edit and polish up resumes. But first I gotta make my own fancy resume website!
I think it's always a good idea to have one ready. Even when you are not looking, you should make sure it is updated and clean. You never know when a great opportunity might come along - If a potential employer asks if you have one, and you don't, that won't look very good. Never hurts to be over prepared.

Also, even if they don't ask for a resume, like if there is an application, to many employers it looks better to have one. It makes it look like you are more serious about the getting the job. In the current job market, that is important!
For instance, I was applying online to some billing jobs at a hospital a couple of years ago. I didn't attach my resume to their (very extensive) application the first two times and get ignored. I attached me resume the third time and got an instant phone call. Maybe a coincidence, but probably not.

I hope you got the job and haven't become a casualty in this recession.
Where I work the majority of the work force is blue collar skilled trades. A resume is not required, and even if they bring one in, they still have to fill out the application. In all honesty I don't think that it helps or hurts either way. The nice thing about it is that you've got all the info you need for the application organized on the resume, so it's easier to fill out the application.
