My cousin bumped into a random person in an elevator and it turns out he owns a marketing company and that's how she got her job.

People tell me, "Oh why don't you try this career or apply to this job....etc.." Well, I've been doing that for years. When I ask them how they get their job they say, "Well, I knew some guy and that's how I got it".

Even then, I'll ask them to give their company my resume and nothing ever comes about.

Why would you think anything would ever come from that?

I got my current job through my network. Develop yours, and work it. Handing a resume to someone you know isn't enough (it isn't anything).

Nope not at all. You have to work hard to get the skills and know how in those great jobs! You can't expect to get a great job if you have no skills and you don't work hard.

I think luck does play a part, too.

I say this all the time.

It isn't all luck, certainly, but I owe a portion of my success to plain luck. Lots of hard work of course, but, being in the right place at the right time and having good connections certainly can play a part (good or bad) in your career success.

Can you give me an example of what you perceive as a great job?

Because really good paying jobs with good benefits are easily obtainable if you play your cards right.

Chance and connections. One would have to be incredibly naive to think none of that plays a part in it. No one says you shouldn't work hard, but we shouldn't ignore the obvious. Just my experience...

Lol people fall into a life of crime too. Just stop whining about what other people have and go work. A good job isn't hard to get

Oh sheesh, ok, some of it is definition then. I know loads of people earning less with great jobs and many people earning more with lousy jobs. I earned a chunk more than that and went out and got a job earning less (about 18k less than my old one) and it is a far far better job.
