Non Profits generally pay less than for profits. The pay off is supposed to come from mission based work (where you are working for more that just some corporation). They also frequently (but not always) tend to have more family-friendly and/or balanced policies.
I've worked for both and enjoyed the non-profit world more although it has its own share of beaurocratic headaches. Plus, they are headed up by a board of volunteers and in the smaller ones you feel their influence.
The highest paying jobs in non-profits tend to be in development (fundraising) which is the NP version of sales. Even executives have to do their share of fundraising. In the non-profit world money is always tight and you are always scrabbling for more.
