Default How long does a background check take?

I got a callback earlier this week from an interview I had about 3 weeks ago. They wanted to know if I was still interested in the job and of course I told them "Absoloutely !!". They said they would be back in touch after they completed a background check.

How long do these take? When should I expect to hear back from them? I assume they will check my credit, references and criminal background but what else do they check?

This a job in middle management in the banking industry, if that matters..............

It can take up to a year depending on many factors.

A few days most likely. If they are doing a credit check, and a national criminal background check, they should be able to get results in about 2 business days.

If they are doing something more extensive, like interviewing everybody you have ever known, that could take weeks.

Not for a job candidate in middle management like OP. I would call them or email and see where they're at.

When I got hired at my bank, they offered me the job the same day I had my interview--with a complete background check. I'd contact them to see what the hold-up is...

The federal government is the only ones I know who takes more than a couple weeks to run a background check.

And even the federal government has an interim background check that takes only a few days and allows a person to be hired and start a job (with some restrictions on access to classified data).

It depends on what type of check. A criminal background one in Mass (CORI) used to take a month or so but I hear now it is five minutes due to databases. Drug testing on the other hand can be awhile.
