I often think this of myself and was wondering if there were any others out there in my boat. I would love to find a job or field that I thoroughly enjoyed. But, I haven't found it yet and doubt that I will. My plan is to never have kids or get married so that I will never need a lot of money. I never want to be beholden to any company.
Any time I have worked 40 hours a week or more I become miserable. I would prefer to work about 20 hours per week. I very quickly get bored with or burnt out from most jobs that I have had. I am also mortified of "getting stuck". When I see older fat people with kids who are stuck in their jobs and how they live in fear of losing their measly paychecks and all of the backstabbing that goes on in regards to that, it all just turns me off. I never want to end up like them.

I can understand your sentiments. When I was working (currently unemployed), I felt a 40 hour work week was long. I really needed the evenings and weekends free so I was able to rejuvenate. I also often escaped to my car at lunch to recharge the batteries. I was not miserable at all, but my life felt pretty full. Work, eat, hit the gym and the rest was down time (apart from all the other chores of life... shopping, bills, etc.) I really have no idea how anyone juggles a spouse, children as well as many other commitments. There is nothing wrong with only working 20 hours a week if you can support yourself on the income that it produces. I feel a 40 hour work week is quite arbitrary. Life is so much more than the number of hours we work. I always had it in my mind that I would save and be able to retire at a young age. Obviously, my long term unemployment stint has thrown a screw into that for the time being, but I am confident I can reach my goals. At the very least, I will be secure in knowing that I have some money saved (even if I can't stop working entirely). Also, as a single person with no kids, I can always downsize my lifestyle and be able to live off of a meager income if it is called for.
Yeah, I don't understand how these people with kids and spouses do it. It would be an insane amount of work and stress.
I don't either. Heck, I had trouble sleeping sometimes and my life is pretty much stress free. I could never live the life "most" people live. As far as money goes, you really don't need more money to raise a family. That is where the government comes in. If you have kids and are low income, you will qualify for a bunch of tax credits, housing, etc. If you don't save for their college, they will get grants. This is why 50% of people do not pay taxes. Families are not necessarily more expensive, but they require a huge amount of time and effort. Focusing on being a good employee is plenty for me!
Sounds like you haven't found the right field of work.
I don't necessarily agree. 8 hours, 5 days a week is a lot of time to be dedicated to one thing. Just because you enjoy something does not mean you want to engage in that particular activity for such a long duration of time. Everyone is wired differently.

Not all fields are 40 hours a week. And not all jobs are the same thing over and over again. There may be one job title but many positions actually are many positions rolled into one.

Hence, once again--
I don't think you've found the right field.
The point is that some people are not suited to work 40 hours a week. It doesn't matter if their job is not the same thing over and over again or if it is many positions rolled into one. That is completely inconsequential as some people enjoy many tasks and others thrive doing one task over and over again. 40 hours dedicated to one aspect of your life is a lot of time. So, yes, maybe the OP needs to find a field that does not have a 40 hr work week. By the way, what fields are 20 hr work weeks? I really don't think there are too many. And I think you are addressing the wrong poster when saying that you don't think I have found the right field
Different strokes for different folks, I suppose. I work more than 40 hours per week, but it's not because I'm in love with my job, lol. It pays the bills. I am currently working on paying down ALL debt so that I can get out from under having to work my behind off just to pay the bills. Once I'm out from under the debt that I've accrued (mainly from being unemployed for one year), I will focus on maybe starting my own business and will never, EVER go into debt again (even if unemployed).

Yeah, sadly most are actually more, sometimes a LOT more than 40 hours per week. Very few well-paying jobs are actually 40 hours/week, most are 50 or 60.
