I have been seeing more help wanted signs at the retail level. This time last year, no one was hiring at all. Hopefully we will start to ramp up now!
Unfortunately for some fields, the companies post the jobs - but remember that websites are now across borders. We are competing on a global level for jobs now.

Are you sure about this? Most ads I see read "Locals only". I'm curious which fields/businesses would heavily recruit foreigners, unless a particular person had an extremely rare skill set.

A lot of those job sites post nonexistent ads, the companies have many positions in many locations and just spam anything they might have or did have at some point. But the later stuff sounds real.

From what I've read lately, the Huntsville stuff is pretty true. Not sure how comfortable a minority or someone from "blue states" would be living there, but that said I know someone from the Northeast (albeit with somewhat Southern roots and fairly "red" politics) who moved there over 20 years ago for NASA and he's doing fine.

No wonder they're hiring. They're all government jobs

Nope. But even if they were, what's wrong with government jobs?

Here's 77 with Northrop Grumman

Job Listings (http://careers.northropgrumman.com/ExternalHorizonsWeb/query.do?keyword=&countryName=selectAll&stateCode= AL%3A%3AUSA&cityName=Huntsville%3A%3AAL%3A%3AUSA&j obCategoryName=selectAll&specialNoteTypeName=selec tAll&sectorName=selectAll - broken link)

There were 89 with Lockheed and about 15 each with Raytheon and Boeing.

Plus there are hundreds of support contractor positions which support those government jobs.

Jobs drive the local economy and real estate:

"While the prices of homes have fallen as much as 23.4 percent nationally and 16.9 percent in Alabama, for January 2007, in comparison with the year before, Huntsville homes sales has been steady. Thanks to the Base Realignment and Closures ( BRAC ) that is expected to draw over 5000 jobs to the Huntsville Alabama area in the next couple of years, mainly from scientist and army personnel from Virginia and Georgia."

The problem with government jobs is that they require taxpayer money and are less efficient than the private sector.

Another thing I would like to mention about this thread is that the number of advertised jobs means nothing without a comparable number of people looking. 10,000 jobs and 15,000 applicants is far better than 87,000 jobs and 450,000 applicants, and unfortunately the latter is reality.
