I get the "woman hater" vibe from your post too. Maybe it's just coincidence that all you list are women. I can feel your pain. I used to work federal govt and several people were out sick more than they were in the office. It peeved me that we probably got paid the same, but I was doing the lion's share of the work. Happily, I received a $500 bonus production check from my boss one day. They didn't.

But let's look at why we are so short:

1. Jane (names changed), after demands were on her position especially, rather than stepping up and rising to the challenge, she ate her way into a gall bladder attack. She is heavy with poor eating habits to begin with, add some stress, and we could tell she was unwilling to step up. So over the weekend she eats and drinks her way into needing gall bladder surgery, now she's out indefinately.

2. Jill, accepted position knowing she had breast cancer. Now she is off for 6 weeks at least.

3. Emily, got another job at higher pay, but she was not qualified for it. Now she sits idly at another agency 90% of the time because she cannot do the job she was hired for.

4. Janice, uses so much sick leave (for back pain and some bronchial problems caused by smoking), she is a 3 day a week on average employee. So mgt reduced her responsibilities to one simple area.

5. Julie, was offended by being asked to do more temporarily, that she managed to get a promotion at another agency rather than step up.

6. Jackie, on a 6 month detail from another unit. Knows very little about HR so is almost useless.

CONCLUSION: Thanks for stepping up ladies. Don't worry, I'll do it all, I eat well and exercise so I'll be here. And I have pride in my job and concern for our customers, so I'll step up because this is what good workers do.

-thanks for listening-
And at the end of the day, your bosses really don't g.a.s. how good a worker you are. When they want you out, you'll be out. That's why you have to pat yourself on the back.

I posted earlier and I've been in the situation before. I quit that job and found something else. While I was there, it was frustrating all the time to deal with dysfunctional co workers but you do your best while you're there and look for greener pastures.

To the OP, maybe you can get a transfer to another department with co workers that will be less stressful for you. Good luck!

Look, you have NO control over how they do their jobs...you can only control how YOU do your job. Duh

True enough, after 30 years in the workforce w/ private sector and Gov't, several different industries, I'm sorry but the big slackers are consistently women.

But don't think I don't appreciate the scores of amazing women I've known on the job who: work long hours, don't take phone calls from their children unless of emergency, are fully committed to their work, show up every day, lead healthy lives, and are fantastic and vital contributors.

But for too many others, work is just a paycheck, and managing their families from work is their focus. And too often women have no agenda for health (poor eating habits, little to no exercise).

Sorry but this swings both ways. Let me introduce you to PantyMan. I worked with him for years and he was a creepy perv. I think he had some kind of sex addiction. He was finally fired for surfing porn at work. Then there's another co-worker who was diabetic. He summarily refused to take care of himself and crawled listlessly from one disability to another. He could have avoided the whole problem by having weight loss surgery or doing whatever he needed to do to lose 100lbs. Last is the guy with the elbow bending disease. I can't tell you how many times he came to work drunk. He's probably still there. Sleeping it off in his cubicle.

There's dead weight in both genders. And you are right. A lot of women who aren't working out because of family responsibilities need to tell their husbands they will be working out on Tues, Thurs, and Sat. Be home and take care of everything just like I do.

I feel your pain. I've worked in so many different jobs where the slackers sponged off of the hard workers like myself. They were able to skate by because they were either friends with the manager or knew how to kiss some major butt. Because of all the political correctness and the ME FIRST culture so pervasive nowadays the responsible get f'd.

This is why people consider govt organizations and workers to be inefficient compared to private sector workers. In the private sector all these people would probably be canned and replaced with someone productive (maybe it depends). Also you know the old saying, it's still as true as ever!! It's all who you know and who you, well, you know the word that rhymes with know just replace two of the letters. I'm at the point where I would rather make 30k just working for myself instead of making 60k working for someone else. I'm just so fed up with company politics and getting screwed over just because someone was fooling around outside of work with the right person. This is also why women might get picked on more when it comes to this stuff since it's usually a woman getting the perks for fooling around with the boss.
