I learned a long time ago that most sucessful people don't brag, and people who have money don't talk about it.
From living in the LA area for 20 yrs and having the opportunity to meet a couple of adult children of old time movie stars who are very wealthy, I can tell you they don't discuss what they have.
In fact one guy whose mother was a well known actress in the 50s who also invested heavily in LA real estate in the 60s prefers people don't know who his late mother was. I only know him through a friend and he is about a down to earth a guy you could ever meet.
And they don't just not brag because it is tacky, it's just not too smart to discuss what you have for safety reasons.(your precious metals comments ). These days you never know who might be thinking to rob you or worse.
If you had stopped at owning my own business and buying a home that would have been OK, but IDK anyone who is well off who ever discusses what they have in investments. Or the amount.
Whether it is online or in person.
The only people who should know what you have are you, your family(and not is some cases), and the guy at Morgan Stanley.
If it it true what you say(which I again is doubtful) I hope you don't go around bragging in real life like you do here. You never know who is paying attention.
Somehow I picture you at a bar telling a girl about how sucessful you are and all your investments, meanwhile someone else is taking this all in.

Women survive on minimum wage, by living with men...
Men survive on minimum wage by living with other men, as roommates. Men on minimum wage never get booty, unless they are really good looking, or willing to go out with older women, and fat women. (Sorry, it is what it is, no offense).
Most people living on minimum wage still live at home with parents.
Living on minimum wage can be done...you never go anywhere, or buy anything. You shop at the Dollar Store, and Salvation Army. You never buy anything new, you pack food everywhere you go, and water, because you can't afford to buy it out. You take the bus. Basically, you hang out at home, and party with friends on cheap beer, and home grown weed.
Been there, done it, it is okay for awhile...but gets old fast.

Matt1984, I'm not talking 1 room 1700s, houses today could fit 3 of the typical families 1965 house. We do not need McMansions; if fewer tried to keep up with the Joneses, they would have less debt, and they would SEE their family..instead of needing intercoms in their huge homes to find their kids.

That is all true not doubt many people live above there means I do not feel sorry for those people but many people live within their means and still can't make it and there is no reason for that to happen in this country with plenty of wealth.

Exactly and there is no reason people should have to live like that just barely being able to keep there head above water. Maybe in other countries that is okay but not here in the United States.

I did not read most of the tread, so maybe I'm echoing somebody.
Lot of folks in this country live in their late grandparents/parents paid off houses. Those properties are worth 40-50k and with the homestead exemption the property tax is very low.
So I don't see any problem to live on minimum wage in this situation and to have a family.

As much as some people can't understand it, there are people who are satisfied with living on minimum wage, or welfare, or SSI. I used to work with folks on public assistance, living in public housing....one client told me she did not have to work, or pay rent, and she was doing fine. She actually put me down, for working, and paying rent...like I was the stupid one. Some people are fine with just scraping by...

If you really want to understand this mindset, pick up a copy of "A Framework for Understanding Poverty". It is very enlightening and gives you a very good understanding of how this mentality works.

Once upon a time there was a guy who lived on a pier. He was fishing for one sea food restaurant, and the owner let him sleep at the restaurant in exchange for the fish.
One day a millionaire came to the pier, saw the guy and started a conversation.
- So why wont you buy a net, so you will be able to catch more fish?
- Why do I need more fish?
- So you can sell it and buy a boat.
- Why do I need a boat?
- So you can catch more fish, sell it, buy few more boats and hire some fishermen for the job.
- And why do I need boats with fishermen?
- So you can sit on the pier all day and drink beer.
- And what am I doing now?
