I just finished 3 interviews for a job at Whole Foods (they make you go through three interviewers). They had this career event today for a new store they're opening. They said there are about 50 positions open and they expected around 300 applicants. Not the BEST odds, but pretty tolerable compared to other horror stories I've heard.
So yeah, it sounds pretty obvious, but definitely hunt down new businesses, any businesses. Restaurants, grocery stores, whatever. It may not be glamorous work but it's better than running out of UI.
