My wife and I discussing which job is harders. This is for fun. I say a Garbageman because of the intense physicality aspect of what the job demand from a worker. Lifting funiture, 50+ pounds of containers, etc... throughout the day.
A Letter Carrier carrying a bag averaging 70# that get lighter throughout day.
They both deal with harsh weather condtion, dogs, etc...
Around here, garbage trucks have these hydraulic devices that pick up and dump the "toter" aka "supercan". So, they don't really do all that much lifting on normal trash pick-ups. Special collections are probably more strenuous.
Their biggest hazard is getting run over by maniac drivers that are late for work. It's still hot (or cold), nasty work.
It's probably not the same everywhere, but my postal carrier has to walk up to the door of every house in the neighborhood (800+). That's a LOT of walking! Plus, before they even can leave the post office, they have to sort all the mail.

I wouldn't want either job!
Similar to here. The garbage collection is automated. Drives up, hydraulic arm grabs container, dumps it, truck moves on. Labor consists of moving the control levers and driving the truck.
But, our mail is delivered to a centralized 'hub' of mail boxes. So the carrier does have to deliver to each box, but each box is one location.
Here it would be postal workers, who have to go to each and every door to deliver. The garbage truck is all automated, and large items for pickup are only done on certain days when they send out special crews and equipment.
Those sound like some mighty advanced garbage trucks and trash cans... around here we DO have those trucks with the arms, but those are for commercial waste in the huge dumpsters. In residential areas we put our trash cans out, and the garbage men throw the bags in.
In my surrounding towns of Aurora, Geneva, Montgomery, Warrenville and others we have to pick up 33 gallons cans or bags plus any funiture thrown out. One man per truck. Naperville and Oswego have the toters and automatic trucks. The letter carrier have for the most part drive up mailboxes with exception of the older communities which require door to door.
As I was explaining to wify look at the fact how many women work for USPS vs Trash Hauler gives a good indication which one is harder.
