Was their ever a nation that had as much power as america in the history of mankind

The combination of NYC and washington D.C alone points to no, there hasnt been a nation more powerful than America

Please, tell me that you're trolling. Having visited a high school in the US for a couple of days, I found it to be absolutely brainwashing. I think that you're a victim of your education system. All this 'overpatriotism' in America made me proud to be from Europe. At least people here know where they stand.

In the sense that we have nukes I suppose we might be. I think the British and Mongol Empires at their height are generally deemed more powerful.

America should be split up. If it ever went through a peaceful partition, I think it would be for the best. And the state borders should be redrawn.

In other worlds, the US would be best if it were more like the European Union. A federation. A commonwealth. That I way I separate myself somehow from the people who embarrass me as an American. The whole thing with the Obama health plan, etc. America is just to big. We can have one part of the country that can follow a more traditionalist government hands-off (this works best in the intermountain for exapmlewest is best suited for this model), while the northeast quarter of the country can follow a more European "socialist" model. I'm serious about this.

Follow the example of the former Czechoslovakia, and split the country up peacefully.

Honestly, though, what place would that be? Patriotism aside, which other country has had the power and influence across the entire globe that the US has? Military, financial, and even pop culture influence (our TV shows, movies, and sports figures being known in every corner of the globe). These obviously can be debated in regards to being good things or bad things to be spreading across the world, but strictly in response to the original poster, where does all of this stand? Certainly no other country in the world at this time has even close to that kind of power and influence, but it would be interesting to compare it to powers from history, such as the British empire.

And just to clarify, I don't say this as a blind patriot as so many of my embarrassing neighbors are. I don't like that type of patriotism, the "I'm better than you" stuff that was really pumped up during George Bush's years- I am just thinking about this realistically.

I'd like to mention the Roman Empire. It covered the whole mediterranean area and was a very important kind of superpower at its time.

What you mean by innovative? In Engineering? Politics? In general, I cannot agree to that point, as many other (less powerful) nations are much more innovative in certain sectors.

The Romans were probably more dominant militarily than we are. The Brits have not been on the losing side since the revolutionary war. No Vietnam for them.

Most innovative.

It was the Brits who created the industrial revolution. Our innovation is riding on their coat tails

Global influence

Again, the British Empire was probably more influential in its time.

Political influence

I am not sure that anyone can lay claim to this one.

Culture influence

Probably the Romans. Much of our existing culture is built on their legacy.

I agree with the OP. There is nothing wrong with taking an objective look at this, and it certainly isn't patriotism overload to say that America's dominance is certainly great. I find it funny that the Czech poster mentioned being in a high school and poked fun at education, but America's higher education system is also second to none. Best universities and teachers in the world.

But did Roman culture completely infiltrate the world? I understand that much of classical republican theory ultimately made its way into the Constitution, but what cultural influences are still with us today?

I was in the 3rd poorest country in the world last summer, and yet I still saw Michael Jackson and American stuff...and this was in Sierra Leone. There's KFC in Japan, blue jeans everywhere, and the list goes on and on. It seems that American culture exportation is so ubiquitous that it has to be unparalleled. JMO.

Hmm, if the American higher education system is so great, how come that nobody could locate Brazil on map in the geography class? And that was 11th grade! We were required to know what is the capital of Burkina Faso in 11th grade here. Also, the biology stuff we did there was similar to what I did in the Czech Republic in 5th grade. Teachers here can randomly choose a student who is going to be examined in their class anytime, any day. And that will be one of the most important grades you'll get. I believe that the best universities in America might be excellent (well I think that they have to be for the massive tuition fees even for domestic students).
