Worthless and pointless. Would be hard pressed to pick any of those mentioned, although at the moment am based in over rated Perth.
Although Zurich and Geneva would all things being equal be top from the narrow band offered. Both have high standards and good location for other countries.
Why is it there are NO American cities toward the top of the list? Is the U.S. just that bad of a place to live? If we are then why do we have so many immigrants? I think at least places like Portland, San Fransisco, or Boston should be in the top 15. They are just as livable as Melbourne or Dusseldorf.

Yeah, I often wonder that too. People risking their lives to move there, lying and dodging the law to do so, living in temporary limbo on some employment visa, or putting up their life savings to buy a business, yet for some reason, it doesn't make these lists
And the recent economic difficulties isn't an excuse as I don't recall any earlier surveys, back in better times, including US cities either. I'd live in the US any day.
I have spent a lot of time in Vancouver. One of my favorite places to visit. The housing costs are out of this world. The weather is rainy/cloudy basically 80 % of the time. The location is excellent for my outdoors life style. Kayaking, sailing, hiking, mountaineering, snowboarding, etc. Vancouver is a foodie city as well. I love the ethnicities there. Its a melting pot of all the incredible cultures from around the world.
Most live-able? Vancouver is a real NICE city. But, part of live-able means cost of living, and being affordable to all of its residents. From everything I've heard about Vancouver, it has an enormous homeless problem and rents/housing is sky high.
Than again, I think sometimes these types of lists aren't intended for people of average means, but more intended for people with a lot of money and want to really LIVE and have cool things to SPEND ON if they do.
The canadian mÃnimum wage is the highest of this continent. Plus, they have the best mass transit, and universal healthcare. (good safety net).
They can spend more in rent, and dont need to worry about expensive health insurance and pricey transportation expenses.
Obviously, they didn't poll those that suffer from SADD. That whole region of the world, from Portland North, would be a slow, or quick, killer to those people, myself included. Hardly livable!
Vancouver, live-able haha. I've lived lived here for 2 years and I've been dying to move. Vancouver has the highest cost of living in the world. For what you can make in this place and with an average price home over the million dollar mark makes this city nearly impossible for people to get a start on a family life ie. buy a house and have kids. With all the foreign investors (rich asians mostly) prices keep sky rocketing.
Not just real estate but nearly everything else. The transit system in Vancouver is by far the most costly out of all the major cities in Canada.
Gas prices are nearing 5 bucks a gallon. Even a gallon of milk costs about 5 bucks as opposed to a reasonable 2.67 I saw the other day at Fred Myers in Bellingham, WA. More on the milk, dairy in general is ridiculous because Canada takes very little imports of dairy products so that our local farmers can have a piece of the pie. Don't even get me started on the alcohol that is at least twice as much hear in Canada than the States. I hear cigs are off the chart here at 12.99 for a 25 pack.
Living in Vancouver will not only bankrupt you but will be a huge cultural shock as well. Caucasians are a minority in Vancouver. Be prepared to say the same sentence three different ways at the grocery store check out so that the east indian, asian, or some other immigrant can make a sad attempt to understand you.
The roads are atrocious in Vancouver, some big wig a long time ago decided not to have any freeways like and normal city would have....no no, we have stop lights on our freeways that go directly through town. And when driving in neighborhoods, get ready to cue in line in order to make it to the next block with the cramped streets wide enough for one car only. Vancouver was not a planned city.
The weather, I'll admit, beautiful .... when sunny, but when your get records of 45 days straight of rain you cant help but feel blue. Rain rain rain, I think they need it all so that the down town east side gets cleaned, or should I say less dirty. The down town east side is home to most of the junkies in Vancouver and if you take a stroll over there you'll find people shooting up as they sit on the sidewalk while trying to make a sale with their stolen goods laid out on their bed, a blanket. Did I mention this all takes place in a one block radius of the Police Station.
Although Vancouver is an ocean side city you'll probably want to head as far away as tsawwassen (30 miles) to swim in the salted water. When I first moved here I went to the popular english bay for a swim. I was wondering why no one was swimming and hundreds of people were just sitting on washed up logs. I soon found out why after I took a dip and came out with my skin as slimy as oil, the water didnt taste like salt either.
Just don't want anyone else to make the same mistake I did (move here)and I dont want some report with falsified info on it to fool ya. Thats life in Vancouver and hopefully I'll be out of hear soon.
I never take any of these articles seriously. I haven't found one that I completely or almost completely agree with. Some of the cities mentioned are great and offer a lot, but I've spent a lot of time in Perth, Adelaide and Calgary and I can say those cities are dull...ugh couldn't pay me to live in any of them. These things are so biased.
