for nightlife and energy it's definetely Berlin or New York City: Berlin, for instance, has so many clubs and bars and the city seems 'never sleeping'. However, it can be very laid-back and quiet too, predominantly on hot summer days Additionally, it is very diverse in regard of culture, history, food, clothing and atmosphere. It's unique! As well as NYC. My hometown, Toronto, isn't 'exciting' at all.

Strongly disagree with both Tokyo and Orlando for someone single. Live in Tokyo, was out last in Shibuya being Saturday night, and after leaving a dead club event early, we roamed around dropping into bars. Some closed by 2am, others were nearly empty, and the streets were as well. It's ridiculous. Shibuya has the most clubs and bars in a concentrated area. Of course there is stuff happening in Shinjuku and Roppongi, but it's rather the same. I partly blame the last train issue and the size of the city. Not many Tokyoites, being workaholics, are keen on screwing up their daily rhythm to hang out all night until 5am when the trains start again. It's a rather serious, workaholic city in general. People hardly have a fun and open vibe except for the brief few hours they're out socializing on a Saturday night (8pm-12am), if they bother.
Lived in Orlando as well. It's a family city and the "fun" things are places geared towards outsiders, tourists. They're expensive, often crowded, and not an easy experience in Florida's 4-5 month summer with daily thunderstorms. The surrounding areas just reek of tacky marketing to tourists. Some people love it (Disney fanatics), at least for a short while. Those places are also quite a long drive from the main residential area, which is absent the tourist tackiness, but not much is really going on. The city center is extremely small. If you hang out downtown on the weekends for a month, you'll quickly recognize or know most of the people in the areas you frequent.

I have lived in Rio for about 10 years but am originally from Seattle, USA before Rio I lived in Cordoba, Argentina, Mexico City, New Orleans, and Los Angeles. I´m not sure if I would put Rio on this list. This is subjective of course but Rio has never felt that exciting to me, although the nightlife has gotten much better since the economy picked up and they closed the street to traffic on weekends in Lapa. If you live here and speak the language Cariocas can come off as pretty provincial. Of course I would say the same about Los Angeles. Not a horrible place, but just not as exciting as it may seem at first.

I hate to be "that guy" but I'm going to throw my two cents in. I think in order for any city to be exciting in a "good way" is if you have enough money to take advantage of those atractions. Rio is defenitly a fun and exciting city if your rich but if your poor then I'm sure most of your day is spent longing around your home or (working if your lucky).
That being said If I didn't have to worry about money and could spend the rest of my life keeping myself entertained I would definetly move to LA! Its not too nice of a place for Middle Class and working class people but I can't think of a better place if you have money! The wealthy suburbs are some of the most buetiful towns in the world, the weather is perfect, the city has everything you could want and you are short drive from some of the best natural locations on the planet!
If you didn't have to work you wouldn't have to spend half your life in LA traffic. Traffic moves pretty well doring the day when most people are at work. THis is huge because even the most exciting city's traffic will suck out all your energy.

NYC is more of a 24 hour city than london. As far as fame/music scenes etc I would say london looks to New york just like the Uk looks to the states. Nyc is the most powerful city in the worlds most powerful nation

USA isn't the most powerful nation anymore. Since 2009, China is more powerful in regard of Military, Finances, Trade (unfortunately)

1) New York - Great mix of neon modern and historic architecture, world-class museums, Broadway
2) Tokyo/Seoul/Hong Kong (tied) - Three gigantic neon cities
3) Las Vegas - Luxurious, party city
