My first shock after returning to the U.S. from 3 years in Germany was the ugly billboards everywhere. It just looked trashy, but I guess you get used to it. And then the crappy food, coffee, and beer (this was around 1992, just when decent coffee and micro-brews took off in the U.S.). Or how ugly so many streets are in this country. The streets lined with strip malls, fast food joints with ugly signs, etc.
