It's quite high up as well so can get quite cool. OTOH Rio is firmly tropical.
The temperature here in winter seldom falls under 10ºC. However, due to the humidty and winds, even foreigners from temperate regions, may find São Paulo very cold in the winter. Due to this it's known in Brazil as "the land of the drizzle". In Rio, people says that there are only two seasons in the year: "heat" and "more heat". Seriously, in the summer the temperature may easily reach 40ºC.
gee you people suck. lima really? i wouldnt even call that a city, i would call it hell. i feel sorry for the people that live there they really need to turn that place around. jakarta cna be ok but otherwise is really 3rd world as is rio and sao paulo have some ok beautiful areas but vastly slums and rubble. mexico has nothing. really i would say taiwan, singapore, hong kong, darwin, honolulu, hilo, miami, cairns. its a small list but for some reason the tropics never have any great cities. its a real bummer...

I know only brazilian cities and Hawaii.
I don't consider Brasilia and São Paulo as "Tropical Cities" because they're about 1000 meters above the sea level, so that make then more cold then we imagine as a tropical city.
Brazil has many cities by the sea and I think it has the highest number of cities with more than 1 million people by the sea in the world:
Florianópolis
Santos
Rio
Vitória
Salvador
Maceió
Recife
João Pessoa
Natal
Fortaleza
São LuÃs
I've been to Honolulu and for sure it still has to eat a lot rice and beans to be able to be compared to Rio...
