Well when the celtic tiger raised its head, so many people went off their rockers with debt, wanting everything now, not waiting, having the most up to date car (2007), two or three vacations per year on the continent. Bought mcmansions as they are called here.
Oh hello ; for a while now the banks have been buying back these mcmansions and letting the people rent them back so the neighbours do not have to know that they have money problems.
ireland is a great place, but it tends to go on the basis of do not let reality get in the way of our dreams.
Love to visit, its just not for me to stay there.

They came here illegaly anyway! Ship the ámadáins home! They live in a new EU country and should therfore abide EU law! Plus now that they are in the EU they have the same national legislation and social benefits as the rest of the EU! But more then anythin, the Romanian consulate in Ireland refused to help them and backed the Irish government on getting rid of them! They said that all these people do not live in poor conditions in Romania and are land owners back in Romania! Get rid of them I say!

Get rid of them ; yes, but also what needs to be done is a tougher screening when they come into the country. Ireland has had an immigration problem for a few years now and will continue to unless there are stricter laws about coming in.
But looking at the flip side ; if an irish landowner went to Romania in the same manner, what would happen??

Screening is somewhat tougher than it used to be. But as we are part of the EU and there is free movement between states of the EU it makes it tougher to keep out the undesirables.

I know Irish people who have gone to Romania and to other EU states too. But those I know didn't become a drain on resources wherever they went. They went there to buy property, not to live in squalor as the Romas and many more did when they came here

Yes. I was born and raised there. Lived the rat race for 21 years. I say fictional because people have a perception of wealth there. People bought hosues for 400,000 to 500,000 euro on 100% loans, and in comparison peoples wages just arent that good to justify that type of loan. I saw the rich get richer, and the working class borrow to keep up. People dont own their cars. My friend bought a house, car and motorcycle all on loans. He is tyed to all of this crap and social life is almost non existant anymore.
I couldnt afford a house there, I wasnt willing to put myself in that much debt to keep up with society. In comparison, i moved to a small town in the US with better wages and a house which costs 90% less here than in Dublin.
The perception of being wealthy is different to being wealthy.

Brian I totally agree with you.
Our house here in Ny is 2400 sq ft, on .6 of an acre. It cost just above $400,000.
The same house on a smaller lot in Ballincollig, Co, Cork will et you back at least 740,000 EUROS. My sisters house which is on a postage size lot and is terraced would cost at least 350,000 euros.
What gets me is the amount of 2007 cars ; you never see any car older than 2000. Where are these people getting the money??
I spoke to my mum the other day. I had heard that the banks are foreclosing on houses at home but letting the owners stay and renting back to the back. I said ; here, the banks throw people out when they dont pay their mortgage for over a year. She thought that was terrible until I imformed her that the people have been living rent free for over a year, probably have new cars, vacations etc.
it happens at home also. Then you have the parents who put up the downpayments for their children, only to have the children foreclose ; is that fair to the parents???
At home I find reality is a dirty word.
oh well.

Aye me too. Luckily my dad bought his house 20 years ago and has it paid off and is sitting on pure profit if he ever wants to sell.
The Celtic Tiger would be absolutely fantastic if people tried to live more within their means, but they dont seem to know how, or maybe dont want to ?
How can you own a 400,000 euro house, have two or three kids, own two cars all on an income of about 45 to 50k.
I love Ireland, its a fantastic place, but im afraid its like California. East to leave and very hard to go back to.

Well Brian
we all know at home appearances are more important than reality.
We watch PBS and get such a chuckle out of Mrs. Bucket ; she reminds us of our parents.
Luckily my family all bought their houses eons ago. My brother lives in Skerries, paid about 60, 000 pounds ; its worth at least 1.1mil now

Yeah. I paid under $50 here for my house in small town USA in New Mexico. And I had it re appraised an im already sittin on $25k to $30k of profit, due to New Mexico expanding.
I would love to go back to Ireland one day, but definately not Dublin as I cannot afford it. Id have to live close so I can catch Shelbourne games though. Dublin is an ever expanding sprawl as the immigrants and 'the culchies' move in, so Dublin will be alot bigger when ever I decide to go back.

What exactly is a culchies' ...just curious
Ahhhh disregard..I've googled it
Irish slang.
Culchies is the plural of Culchie and means any Irish person from outside Dublin, whether from another city or from the countryside
Does Dublin still have many Tinkers about?
