A slum in Ireland? What's going on?

When I visited Ireland a few years ago, I saw some people the Irish called Travelers. Are these the same as the people discussed here?

no travellers are an entirely different ethnic group of caucasian descent who would have lived in ireland for generations. roma gypsies are completely different and have only started to come to ireland in the last few years and have no shared ancestry with irish people, unlike travellers. there is alot of controversy surrounding the traveller population in ireland, but they are all fully irish citizens with a long cultural history in the country.

you must have left when I did - during the late 80's, they called it the brain drain - we all left, I was with Bank of Ireland headquarters and they let go of all their staff and hired people with terribly low salaries. Okaydorothy is right on about everything she says... but I do think that people are panicking because the house they paid 60k for in the 80's was valued at perhaps 1m euros and now might only be worth 800k and many people borrowed on what it was worth a few years ago. My brother bought town homes for all his kids 600k no problem and is no regretting it.

I heard all the people who came to Ireland a few years ago for work went back but fly back to Ireland to pick up their social security checks and pretend they still live there. Who would blame them the benefits they got by living in Ireland, free medical etc.. was a great offer.

I would for one.

They came here, took the money and when it seemed like the piggy bank was drying up they ran.. taking their money with them.

They're a serious drain on our resources.

Though they're being sought and caught regularly. I only wish the law was tougher on them.
