A slum in Ireland? What's going on?
On the way from the airport into Dublin, in a roundabout along the M50 motorway, it looks like there is some sort of third-world slum encampment right by the motorway itself. What is this? Who are those people?

I'm not Irish, and these people definitely do not look like Irishmen. They look Roma. I'm guessing from Romania.

I live a mile from them. They are Roma gypsies who arrived in a group of 50 from Romania some weeks ago and set up camp at that roundabout. During the week the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) removed some of the younger children to a safe place. On Friday morning the police and Immigration service served immigration orders on all of them. It's probable they will all be deported back to Romania shortly.

And your reason for that statement? Do you live here, have you any knowledge of these people?
Please research before rushing to judge. Thank you.

Probably immigrants seeking asylum. Of course probably more coming in then can be shipped into temporary housing.

If the authorities acquiesced to their demands, then the floodgates would have been opened to many more thousands of Roma gypsies. Apparently (according to the Romanian ambassador), some of these 'refugees' had property in Romania, while others were stealing and begging on the streets of Dublin.
I use to see the odd Roma gypsy in New York but nowhere like the numbers that you have in European cities and towns. They can spoil your visit to Europe so stay well away from them. I witnessed tourists giving them money, only to be harassed for more.

I watched as police and two coaches arrived at the campsite today. The Romas have been taken away (there were 80+ of them) and according to a news report they will be deported back to Romania within 16 days.

Good. The Irish government is doing the right thing by being firm. It's not safe for people to live in slums by the motorways.
