My friend and I went for a walk in downtown LA at time. It was so quiet it was eerie...we also ran into some trouble when we decided to go for a walk early in the morning on the Blvd (it was also very quiet) and ran into two guys who made us a bit uncomfortable and claimed (jokingly, I hope!) they were Russian Mafia. They kept such a straight, serious, face, though we weren't going to hang about to find out! They asked us where to find drugs, enough said.
Yikes ... Downtown LA isn't the best place to be after hours ... Not like Manhattan, NYC where the City never sleeps ...
I will say that I absolutely love THE IDEA of Los Angeles. That city sparks curiousity, dreams, hollywood celebrities (which I have no interest in, but anyone can be somewhat starstruck to actually see them doing normal things), the climate, the imagery that it sells, the surfing and beaches, the beautiful people, etc.
It's just unfortunate that the reality seems to be car culture, highways, expressways, strip malls, etc....which whenever I really research about the reality, is what quickly surfaces.

Yes, we also went for a night-time stroll down the Venice boardwalk - all the denizens come to, you get to see another side of it. The guide books warn you to stay out of Venice at night but we didn't run into any trouble there at all.
Santa Monica too feels pretty safe at night. Both seem more lively than downtown LA after hours, that's for sure. I don't know how dangerous it actually is wonder around DTLA at night (we weren't even there THAT late, like 9-10 pm) but anywhere which is devoid of people just feels less safe.
I felt very safe walking around Manhattan, even at 2-3 am. Least safe I felt was Las Vegas away from the strip, where I was the victim of theft, and parts of Memphis even downtown in broad daylight where there's hardly anybody about.

This is very true. I think you summed it up nicely.
To the vast majority of people in this world, Los Angeles, if they even know it at all, is just a place in America.
