well English is an strange language, and dutch is even more closer to German than English. I guess its due to England isolation from the continent that resuted it to be less similar than other germanic languages.

Catalans don't understand Portuguese, only vinho verde and bacalhau.

As to regional Italian dialects, we understand Italian regional dialects such as Sicilian, Sardinian, etc. Also Catalan as spoken in Sardinia.

I don't know when I heard them they sounded more different than I expected. Ethnologue seems to place Extremaduran as closest to Spanish.

Ethnologue report for language code: ext

I think these are in Extremaduran.

Gramatically yes, but if you are spanish speaker you'll be damn in you can understand
much of what they are saying in portuguese.
phonetically these two languages are very very different!! specially the brazilian variety
The funny things is that portuguese speakers can understand spanish speakers relatively
well, but not the other way around.
To a spanish speaker Italian is way easier to understand when speaking, portuguese is easier to read.

Agreed. If you know Spanish, you can probably read about 75% of written Portuguese, however speaking and listening to it, you will be totally lost. The pronunciation is very very different.

While with Spanish and Italian the you might be able to read about 50% of Italian, however you will know to pronunce most of the words because phoentically Italian and Spanish are very very similar.
