I live in Cabarete in the DR. No worries. used tolive in Ottawa Canada. Some places there you do not walk around at night. In Cabarete no problem. Most of the deathsare DR people killing DR people. Us gringos are "protected" as they want tourism to grow.I live in the Casa Blanca Hotel and we walk around town at night with no fear.

Please explain how a small population makes the murder rate of an area "artificially high". Wyoming has a small population, but that doesn't give it a high murder rate.

I think he may mean that since the population is so small, the murders give a higher percentage. Like if 2 people lived in a country and one killed the other, 50% of the population would be murdered. That sounds high but it's only based on a population of 2 people. Hope that makes sense.

The math makes sense, but other than that it makes little sense as I have never seen murder rates measured in that way. They are usually measured by just the total number of murders or the number of murders per 100,000 people from what I have seen.

Caribbean is a fantastic pass through for running drugs from South America to the United states. A very high percentage of "Tourists" move drugs under the cover of vacationing and call in hench men from the states that touch down on the island and leave many bodies before departing and leaving some local with the blame...Happens a lot on St.Croix but I go where I please. In the last few years the Murders have become more organized as the bad guys seem to be learning how to shoot or dispose of their enemies without leaving bloodied innocent bystanders..don't leave you wallet in your shoe on the beach and wonder why it's gone, but actually being a victim of murder is still a very small chance...IN ST.CROIX anyway...in Haiti or Jamaica stay in an all inclusive resort please.

Damm those murder rates are alot higher than any of the states in the US. There are some countries in South America that are higher than the Caribbean. Like Columbia and Brazil. I was reading that Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo in Brazil have murder rates just as high or higher than New Orleans.

Some seem way inflated. How credible is that source?

As observed, most murders are either local - two people here with a beef -or drug related or both. In Montreal Hell's Angels and Satan's choice hada war, 40 people died. Did that make Montreal unsafe for residents or tourists? No. But sure unsafe for a ganag member. Same here in the DR. Tourists are safe. Gringo residents are safe, as much as anywhere.

That doesn't at all surprise me. New Orleans has the highest murder rate in the U.S., and we're somewhat Caribbean in atmosphere and culture.
Orleans Parish has a murder rate of 71 per 100,000 residents, and that's terrifying sometimes.
Jamaica, as a nation, has an alarming murder rate of 150 per 100,000 residents. That is unbelievable.
And, people say New York is a tough town. Give New Orleans some credit!
