Colored races seem to shoot each other a lot more often, ie New Orleans and Jamaica. I don't plan on going out of my way to see either one of those places in the near future, let em kill each other. It's called population control; sometimes there are just too many drug dealers for a 1 block area...

Unfortunately, innocent bystanders get killed, too.

I read in the paper all the time about a young child, anywhere from 2 months to 5 years old, being the victim of random violence.

I am white, and I remember living in the St. Roch neighborhood, on Music Street, where gunfire could be heard regularly during the evening hours. Even in the Vieux Carré ('French' Quarter), I am a prisoner in my own home. It's not just black on black, too. Besides, murder is murder, and it's horrible that we've allowed our cities to become hell holes, but it's a very complicated issue. Not all New Orleanians are racist, and a very good majority of the people here are good people, if a little morally corrupt.

I'm not sure about other Caribbean cities, yet I do consider New Orleans to have a place in the Caribbean. I think the only way I could know would be to live in Jamaica for a few years, but I'd go to Brazil before I went to Jamaica.

The last post made me laugh....JA is safer than Brazil. I live in Montego Bay JA.....I suggest all of you read the local papers online and then you will see for yourselves that ppl aren't being killed on a hourly basis. There is nothing wrong with coming to JA..it's just as safe as any other place out there. I've seen worse crime in the states then I've seen here.

Let me ask you...have you ever been here?

I will assume your comment was tongue in cheek and to some extent you're right...many of those ppl never ever leave the compounds to really explore the island. There is a small Sandals Inn in Mo Bay that is right by the " Hip Strip" and isn't fenced in and guarded and the ppl can come and go as they please on their own or with the hotel bus. They ask us about different places they can go to get some really good local food...( Pelican is crappy and over-rated) I send them to the little Rasta's guy shop or the little old lady's place in the market where you really get home made Jamaican food...and you're not ripped off on the price either.

Most of the crime that is here is not random...it's a drug deal gone bad or someone messed with someone else's woman or gang related.........some of the same crap you see in the states. But I walk all over Mo Bay ( day and night) and spent all day Wed in Kingston ( big bad Kingston LOL ) and never ever had anyone look at me funny or make me feel uncomfortable.

Well, that settles it. Never really wanted to go anyway. Maybe Cuba before the commies leave and it all changes.

Default Yeah, I went to Honduras in '01...

It's not on that list but Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula were friggin' scary. I want to travel to every major continent, but due to the insane crime, South and Central America are going to have to wait until I'm a more seasoned traveler.

Funny though, I thought Africa or the Middle East would have had the highest crime rate.

The problem is, places like that might not report their murder statistics. Many parts of Africa are very corrupt, and they don't care about their people, so murder isn't important to them, and the Middle East, well..
