One of the most interesting things about Norway is that the oil wealth isn't actually spent. Its all invested in a sovereign wealth fund. Norway runs on the non-oil income.
Precisely. Most people think "oh, they are rich from the oil, that's why the country does so well", but it's much more than that. Also, a clear example of making the most of your natural resources and a stark contrast with your Russias, Venezuelas, Saudi Arabias and such.
Interestingly enough, the index does not measure "happiness" but "prosperity", which at least it makes the whole thing a bit less silly.

I am not surprised that the USA, Canada, Sweden, Norway, Netherlands, Switzerland, Denmark, and Australia are in the top 10 for happiest countries in the world.
I am surprised though that New Zealand and Finland made the top 10.
Also, Norway does belong high up on the list, but I don’t know about 1st place for three years in a row.
I feel like some Asian countries should have made the list in the top 10 such as Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, and maybe South Korea. I assume these countries still did well for the global ranks and probably at least made the top 20/top 25.
Japan would definitely be high on this list such as the top 10 to top 20 if that depressing earthquake/tsunami event didn’t happen over there this year. That seems to be causing some depression in Japan. It will take some time for the country to heal. I assume Japan probably went down many ranks between the year 2010 and 2011 mostly because of that but it will get better soon.
That website link about "The World's Happiest and Saddest Countries in the World" is about a great subject and has some decent substantial details, but it could have been much more specific about many more different factors that can cause happiness and a high quality of life for a country.
Also, it should have included a list with how all of the 195 countries in the world were ranked instead of just talking about 18 different countries.

I'm very surprised the US is in the top 10, I'd fully expect it to be below at least France and Austria.. but a lot of these rankings and index's contradict one another

I feel like the USA belongs around 10th place.
However, I also do feel like France should be above the USA and be 8th or 9th place for this subject.
United Kingdom/England deserves to be high up on the list such as the top 25, but a bit lower than France, and the USA.
Most Americans I meet are very unsatisfied with their nation, their government, their healthcare, their education system and police. Considering most of these factors I'd probably put the UK above the US.
But I guess the same could apply to most countries. I thought Germany had great transport for example but apparently Germans think otherwise.
