So, I found this book at the library...

Robert Young Pelton's The World's Most Dangerous Places: 5th Edition

I browsed through it, read alot of it. It lists the 25 most dangerous countries in the world. Places where you'll be lucky to make it out alive!

This is what the author has as the most dangerous of the world...

The World's Most Dangerous Places
Brazil
Nigeria
Mexico
Democratic Republic of the Congo
South Africa
Venezuela
Columbia
Myanmar
Honduras
Tanzania
Guatemala
Mozambique
Ivory Coast
Rwanda
El Salvador
Dominican Republic
Ecuador
South Sudan
Jamaica
Puerto Rico
Lesotho
Turkmenistan
Panama
Swaziland
Namibia

Do you agree with the author's picks?

The DR is bad but I wouldn't put it in the same league as El Salvador or Honduras. Ecuador shouldn't be in there either.

I think Haiti, Central African Republic, Somalia, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan are more dangerous than Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Ecuador.

I don't think many of these places are that dangerous, i voted for Honduras mostly because it has the highest murder rate in the world and the dsituation doesn't seem to be improving, San Pedro de Sula has topped the list for a few years now.

Having visited twenty of the countries on the list, and not finding anything there that seemed at all threatening, I'd be hard pressed to rank them.

There are certain cities in the world that I wouldn't want to be in the wrong part neighborhood at the wrong time of day, but that wouldn't make the country dangerous, and vice versa. I've stayed overnight in places like Maceio and San Pedro Sula and Lagos, and they seemed just like anywhere else.

I don't think there are any dangerous "countries" as such, there isn't any place where I would not trust the local people to come to my aid if necessary. But I wouldn't trust the police in any country, not even the USA.

As far as dangerous is concerned, in the third world one is far more likely to be killed by a macho bus driver or an incompetent doctor, than by a murderer.

Honduras for the murder rate. Certain areas of Nigeria and Mexico seem to be bad too, and I'm surprised Somalia isn't there.

I think we have to distinguish between dangerous places and dangerous country. For example, without special training, you will not be able to get to here and come back to civilization:

https://www.google.ru/maps/place/73%...!3m1!1s0x0:0x0

(73°29'11.6"N 113°42'36.0"E)

Foto (russian language):
За Краем Асфальта - 73 ГÐ*АДУСА НИЖЕ Ð*КВАТОÐ*А. Часть 9.

Although locals residents live there all year round. This dangerous places in not dangerous country.
