I find Portuguese fascinating to listen to, particularly its European variant, because when I see it written down I think I should understand it, and when they speak it I hardly understand a word!

Also, with its abundant nasals and sibilants, it sounds more like Polish than any other Romance language. Strange.

You didn't ask, but IMHO the ugliest-sounding Romance language is Catalan. Aggressive and clacking.

Yeah I didn't put some of the smaller lesser known Latin languages, just because people aren't as familiar with them, that's why I put them as other.

My opinion on the top three:

Italian, the most beautiful language; French, a very, very close second; Spanish (spoken in Spain).

I think Brazilian Portuguese is a lovely language! But I find European Portuguese rather unpleasant sounding myself.

It doesn't strike me that way, though it does have sounds one doesn't expect in a Romance language. Occitan, the northern branch of the same language is beautiful...listen to Netania Darveth singing Joseph Canteloube's Songs of the Auvergne.

I like the sound of Romanian the most, though it looks uglier written down. French looks great on paper but I'm not fond of the sound.

My mother also keeps saying Portuguese sounds like Russian. She has no knowledge of any language apart from her mother tongue, so at a superficial level there might be similarities. But to a trained linguist they sound very different.

And I agree with your remark on pronunciation. I was fluent in Spanish before I moved to Portugal. But when I got here, I hardly understood any spoken Portuguese. Took me years to get into it. And still, when people speak really fast or some dialect, I still don't understand everything.
Nevertheless, nowadays I love the sound of European Portuguese, especially High Portuguese. It has some additional odd sounds, though. Especially when educated women speak Portuguese, it sounds sensual

Brazilian Portuguese sounds more like a mix of Italian and Spanish to me, a bit harsh, not as harsh as Catalan, though.

My least favorite language is certainly French, I never liked its sound.

I actually like Romanian!

Oddly, don't you think even though it's the opposite of what you'd expect, Portuguese and Romanian sound a bit alike?

My favorite Latin language is Latin, but my favorite in the poll is Italian. Least favorite is Spanish (based entirely on the sound, written I like it just fine).
