Thus far I have yet seen much to sway my decisions.

Some Guabina folk from the Eastern Andes range and consequent Folk-Rock/Pop. Unlike Latin America, I find that continental Europe (apart from the Balkans and Ireland) has lost touch almost completely with its folk traditions in its mainstream music.

Recent BBC article on Vallenato, one of the more commercially popular of Colombia's 1,000+ genres. Sometimes said to be the blues of the country...or of the Caribbean coast specifically.

"The driving force behind Colombia’s acclaimed folk music is not Colombian at all – it’s German" - Trossingen & Ulm to be precise.
BBC - Travel - The surprising origin of Colombian folk music

Four main sub-genres of Vallenato as illustrated below:

1. Merengue
2. Son
3. Puya
4. Paseo

Vallenato (paseo sub-genre) mixed with the Jamaican dancehall 'Dem-Bow' beat...over 1/2 billion views - one of the world's most viewed and streamed songs of 2017.

The main part of the chorus says, "Let me steal a kiss that touches the soul, like one of those old Vallenato songs we like."

The video tells 4 stories.

1. A guy that hasn't said "I love you" to his single working mum since he was a boy.

2. An old couple that have been married for 47 years but no longer eat together.

3. A young couple that have been going out for 3 years but the guy has never serenaded his girl. - Yes this is still a big thing in LatAm.

4. Some ginger kid who has been besotted with a girl since 3rd grade.

The video is filmed around Bogota and nearby countryside in the Andes.

What I think is really nice about Latin AMerica is that a lot of Classic Rock bands are really popular. Many public spaces in the US blast crappy Top-40s music like Taylor Swift, Bieber, Black Eye Peas, Iggy Azalea, it's embarrassing. But in Latin America rock is super popular, you go into almost any cafe and you will hear old rock

USA - Good mix of everything
UK - New Wave, classic rock
Argentina - Some of the best rock on the entire planet, underrated reggae scene
Brazil - Reggae, rock, samba
Colombia - Cumbia, vallenato, rock, salsa
Peru - Really nice folk music from the Andes, rock, underrated salsa scene in Callao and Chincha
Dominican Republic - Salsa, bachata, merengue

France produces the best electronic music hands down. Then, you have UK, USA, Australia, Sweden, Netherlands, Italy and Belgium producing some quality music of most genres as well.
