The Kerguelen Islands or Terre Adelie are the furthest places I have been to. Certainly the most remote.
I loved how desolate and remote the Kerguelen were ( it reminded me in parts of extremely remote Scottish Islands - nobody but scientists live there) but the freezing winds were about as unpleasant as they come. And I twisted my ankle in a rabbit hole.
Terre Adelie was simply beautiful , and really quite magical. It felt so alien but also peaceful and quite mesmerising. Huge horizons, skies so blue and bright they take your breath away and the sense of being the only person on the planet well, almost. Perfect for an anti social person like myself.
All the other places i have been to were all within 1000 miles (by air).
Going to Phuket, Thailand for 3 weeks, leaving Saturday, almost 5900 miles from me.
I would say the furthest I've travelled was from Los Angeles, CA to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. There are no direct flights. So, it was 10 hours of flying from Los Angeles to London. 2 hour layover in London. Then board another plane for Baku, Azerbejian-so that was a 5 hour flight from London to Baku. Then, 1 hour layover in Baku, before flying for 5 hours to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Then, there was a 3 and half layover before boarding a 1 hour domestic flight from Bishkek, Kyrgystan to Osh, Kyrgyzstan (not to mention 2 hour taxi ride to Jalalabad, Kyrgyzstan). So, a total of 21 hours from LA to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, but 26 hours later to arrive at final destination. I would say, Los Angeles, CA to Kyrgyzstan is about half way around the world. I crossed North America, the Atlantic Ocean, Europe and half of Asia.
Just curious, why did you go there? What was it like?
The furthest I've ever been on dry land from where I live right now would be Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, Mauritius, 10,759 miles. The only place on land further away would be Kerguelen, about 133 miles farther. I found Mauritius to be a bit disappointing. Not many scenic attractions, and the people not overly friendly.
I am from Malaysia and now living here in Chicago, so I guess this is the furthest I have traveled.
My favorite thing about this city is the downtown. It's so compact, urban but not roughly crowded or dreadful. The buildings are beautiful too. I also love the restaurants.
LOVED: food, natural beauty of the actual country, nightlife and the beaches.
DISLIKED: the abrasive people, and the horrible heat!
Overall, an amazing place and I cannot wait to go back!
