If Houston can't be considered a coastal city/metro, then how does LA count...? Like Houston, LA's city center is NOT on the coast. LA has a deep water port within corporate limits connected to the Pacific. Just like Houston with the Ship Channel connecting its deep water port (also within Houston proper) to the Gulf of Mexico. BAYtown and La PORTe may not sit on open ocean, but they're on water that's directly connected to the Gulf.

So is Houston's CENTER DIRECTLY on the gulf? No. But half of Houston's METRO is VERY coastal in the literal sense and has to deal with coastal issues like direct hits from hurricanes, storm surges, the resulting flooding, and more. Just like "coastal" Los Angeles.

Airport of Los Angeles is right next to the ocean, where is Houston's airport located

Intercontinental is north of downtown, putting it about 50 mi off the water. Hobby is a little closer on the south side. Where are LA's OTHER airports...?

And what does the location of either city's airport have to do with the fact that a significant portion of metropolitan Houston abuts either the Gulf of Mexico directly or an inlet of said body of water....? And how does this change the fact that Houston, like LA, has a deep water port in its city limits capable of handling ocean going ships? How is the fact that (at least part of) metropolitan Houston is coastal in question, when LA isn't in question as a coastal city or metro?

The first post in this thread stated that any city with a salt water port or suburbs next to salt water counts as being coastal.

You mean, you can make a city "coastal" just by putting its airport near the coast?
