By the time I paid Federal, State and local taxes on $1M USD, hopefully I'd have enough left over to buy a plane ticket to visit some of the aforementioned locations...
If you made it ten million after taxes at least a young person could retire on the interest while investing it safely with today's rates. They'd still be bleeding it away through inflation, though.
I would be a bit of a globe hopper, then, renting an apartment until I tired of it. I'm not so good with other languages - probably Edinburgh, London, a few places in Australia. I would cruise.
Info Guy, did you literally mean $1 million, or did you mean "enough money that you'd have the freedom to live anywhere you wanted to, without being fabulously wealthy"?
As for me, I'd do some more traveling first, and then make a choice as to my home base. I'd like to live some place in Europe from which I could easily explore the rest of Europe -- France, perhaps. Then I'd want to do the same in Southeast Asia for a while -- maybe Thailand or Malaysia. I have a friend who has been living in Vietnam for the past 7 years, and he loves it. $1 million would go pretty far there.
