I was reading an article from The UK Sun and it claimed that in 2002 the UK's violent crime rate was 11,326 per 100,000.
It went on and on about how dangerous the UK is compared to these countries and tried correlating the supposedly low violent crime rates in Brazil, the US, and Russia with the harder prison systems in the US, Russia, and Brazil.
According to data UK media cited, Brazil's violent crime rate was 927 per 100,000 compared to the UK's suspiciously high 11,326 per 100,000 as well as the US's 4,118 per 100,000 and Russia's 1,754 per 100,000. So the UK has a violent crime rate 11 times Brazil???
What's up with this because there's no way in hell this is true. All of a sudden London's more dangerous than Rio? Yeah right. Is this the crap they're feeding people in the UK? And people think OUR media sources are fear-mongering liars? Yeah, let's stick a punk from Brixton in one of the Rio favelas and we'll see if he survives the night...
You have to compare what is considered a crime, especially what is considered a violent crime in each of the countries you're comparing.
Last October 571 people were murdered in São Paulo state during a wave of violence between drugdealing gangs and police.
Yep there is no comparison. Can't beat Brazil at violence, can't beat Brazil at football and certainly can't beat Brazil when it comes to mixed martial arts. Or samba dancing.

Just kidding. Of course it isn't but I just tried to call some attention to the strangeness of Thread's tittle. It's clear for everyone that UK holds its violence and crime rates way lower than brazillian ones. There's no sense on discussing that. One thing that might be happening is an ascent of crimes at big cities such as London, Manchester and Liverpool, but it is a 'normal' consequence of all big metropolis around the world.
See what I mean? Despite the fact that São Paulo has a large population, the numbers show a near critical situation according to UN standards.
And one may think that São Paulo's status is a high one but, comparing it to Brazil's average(27,1 in 2009) you realize that we're on a downtrend(at least we were until October, when killings increased as I pointed out before)...

Look at this comparison, New Orleans has over 300,000 people in the city and still had more murders than London which has over 7 million.

If anything it actually looks like the serious crime rate in London is rather low :-), a pat on the back to the Metropolitan Police!
