No they are not. Everytime I go to the States I feel like I am being treated like a killer or something. They dont even say hello. Whats your reason for travelling to the US. I have to answer but I would much rather say its none of your business what I do and what I will do over there.

( No people in right mind smile at strangers when everyday life is full of s**t.. er.. unpleasant surprises. ( Including billionaires - they don't smile either))))
PS. I've noticed though that at the bottom of the society downtrodden Americans don't smile all that much either.

In Spain, when someone smiles at you everybody thinks that:
1. He is crazy
2. He is a "TestÃculos de Jehova" (Jehovah's Witnesses), a beggar or a tout
3. He's laughing at you
The more people show a somber charachter, the more I grin to them. Not a sweet smile, just a stupid grin. I hate it when people stare at you with a somber face.
If you're acting like that to others in a country where people are (culturally?) somber, that's very rude and disrespectful of you.
You'll probably also notice that the friendlier the nations are to tourists (at least according to an American magazine's survey) the more they rely upon tourist dollars. Nations near the top don't work too hard to attract tourists, either because they don't need them (France doesn't need to advertise) or because they don't want them.
To be fair the Spanish are rude but I think that is because they are sick of foreigners (mostly Brits) using their country as the nightlife, sick bucket of Europe. I could only describe most of my holidays to Spain as chaos, admittedly it only happens in certain parts of Spain, but all this drunken behaviour must be an annoyance to the Spanish.
It's the only thing keeping Spain afloat. If they dislike drunken tourists they should ask their government why Spain has little industry to support itself..

good point, tourists have been flocking to london and paris forever. they are no tropical paradise nor are they cheap destinations and lets face it..they are not the warmest people either and yet...
I thought Lisbon Portugal had some really rude people (IMO)
