Then again most of Western Europe is very tolerant.

...as long as one keeps his personal opinion to himself or has a way of life not too different from the mainstream. I don't call this being "tolerant", I call this "hypocrisy"...

As to personal freedom and being tolerant, the US. The US has the individualist thing that is quite scarce around here.
dont confuse dutch tollerance for gays , prostitution , drugs , porn with a willingness to capitalise on any level , the dutch are the ultimate pragmatists , they see money in vice

Well, then they are no different from Spain. We have gay wedding, prostitition on every level, porn, gambling, free abortion and gay couples can adopt kids.

But Spain is like that because of a reaction to the church, or to Franco, but Dutch have always been like that, open and tolerant traders. Basically, they don't care as long as you don't mess with them.

They have always been like that, traders, people open to trade, to the world. They are mentioned in the Galli Belli, the typical War of the Galia written by Caesar we had to study at school, as friendly people that only wanted to make business, the Frisians. Totally different from the inhabitants of Germania.

...maybe . But try to talk to one of these nudist so called liberated females on the beach into a one night stand, chances are they will look at you with wide eyes like if you were Count Dracula...Decadence already existed in ancient Greece and Rome, our societies didn't invent it, calling it "tolerance" won't change the fact that human nature will never change...

I'm a bit surprised Brazil's not on the list...

About the Netherlands: they indeed used to have "the" reputation of tolerance, but that has faded a bit since Geert Wilder's been dictating politics there. Nonetheless, the Dutch are (as one poster said above) very pragmatic, although they have a serious tendency towards bluntness and "in-your-face-ness".

You can call it what you want I reaaly couldn't care.

Western Europe including Britain are quite tolerant in terms of comparison with many other parts of the world.

Why where do you think is tolerant outside of Western Europe, North America and Australia/New Zealand.

Western Europeans, Americans and other relatively tolerant nations often don't appreciate how lucky they are.

You are quite right, I think there is a misunderstanding here, I actually believe Anglo Saxon countries are the most tolerant, then Western Europe (depends on which country, but slightly less tolerant overall than Anglo Saxon countries), and Eastern Europe...no way : do you actually believe Albania or Moldavia are very tolerant? they are probably much less so than some Asian countries (Japan, Thailand...) or even Latin American (Costa Rica, Brazil, Argentina)..

I don't think so Canada is a tolerant country in all aspects. In manner of gender equality and religions, they are so well. As usual some social differences is there, Everyone is free to think. Obviously differences will be there.
