Oddly, nudity is becoming more taboo in Western nations. There was a much stronger nudism culture back in the 60's and 70's and nudity at the beaches was far more common too. Today the average age range in nudist colonies is 50 to 60. The whole movement seems to be dying off.

That's ironic considering Hungary is fairly conservative by European standards. In America at least nudism synonymous with ageing Hippies.

A couple of points:

I seem to understand from your post that most Italian beaches a re private. Surely that can't be right?

Most Spanish beaches are also family-oriented yet topless sunbathing is common. And guess what: no one cares.

The Anglo countries typically find nudity offensive (all of them), but the US is borderline Islamic when it comes to the female body.

I know it's not what most people think, but I sense there is a slow creep back to conservatism and "modesty" in most of the western world. I know it doesn't seem that way what with the decriminalization of marijuana in some places, the banalization of pornography, etc., but alongside all of this there seems to be a steadily growing number of people who have more conservative views on nudity, clothing, alcohol, drugs, sex, etc.

It's as if it's a reaction to the perception that western society has become a "free for all".

I've been going out on a limb lately and predicting to my entourage that religion is going to make a comeback in almost all of the western countries where religious adherence has lapsed in a big way over the last 20-30 years.

You heard it here first!

A lot of the U.S. trending away from nudity has to do with the fact that kids no longer get naked in the showers after gym in school. We are brought up now never seeing anyone nude until you hit puberty and only want to see them nude for...reasons. This instills a general "weird" vibe by anyone who wants to be naked around other people. There are several articles out there now about fitness clubs having to make individual shower stalls for the members because younger men/women wont shower where other people can see them.

Im actually all for nudity and skinny dip in my pool all the time, my friends think Im an absolute weirdo when I tell them about it, or just say "Oh I could never do that, what if someone sees me!"

I suppose that some of it is a reaction to the pendulum swing in the liberal direction and some of the perceived negative effects of that: drunk driving, sexual abuse, etc.

But it's still ironic to hear millennials who are more socially conservative than their parents or even their grandparents.

I think the situation is only starting to normalise itself. I wouldn't call it a reaction, but maybe even young people have started to find the limit for example about openness about sex. Maybe they think it's no need to go further, and let's stop here. And as the Western societies are quite liberal these days anyway, there is not the need for youth rebelling against the establishment, like people born in the 50's-70's maybe felt. And so no need for any shock factor either.

I've notice that young people are becoming more conservative, and this is reinforced by a survey done here in summer among 15-30 year olds: 61% thought that Finland is more important than reducing global poverty, 84% wanted to strengthen the job market, 50% to the will to defend our country and 45% wanted to enhance patriotism. Quite conservative to me.
