Of course there are people like you say that are perfectly happy on welfare and live of the state, but that's not how I see the majority of the people on welfare, most try very hard to get a job and it isn't only people on welfare that are poor, people on very low wages are a lot of the time even worse off.

Some abuse in everything in life. Although there is every chance that many folk will be redundant to requirements on the labour front in the not too distant future. Just what these folk are supposed to do is unclear. Too many people too few jobs that looks to be the future. WE don't hear the word job sharing any more. It was a concept raised some decades ago to cope with the dis placement of people from jobs owing to technology....
Sometimes it's a huge success, but only if both parties are invested in the product and communicate well.
That's how it was in my office for 20 years.
Then we got a slacker in every other day (per schedule), late on a daily basis, abused sick leave, when he was in produced crap work. He was a higher graded employee and I had to treat him like a new employee. It sucked.
I got to reorganize and the person will be working 1/2 hour away from my office (that should be fun, he's got a bad record and will probably get fired in the first 6 months after he returns from holiday).
In an ideal world, that would be nice, but it's difficult at best.
That's probably why it's not seen as a viable option.
The lower class are looked on with contempt by many Americans.
Stereotypical low-class people do not work but receive loads in government benefits, and despite the income and asset limits imposed on recipients, they are somehow able to afford "luxuries" like big-screen TVs, custom wheels for their cars, and expensive brand-name clothes for their kids. They are highly irresponsible; women mother multiple children from different men, and men sire children with multiple women, to whom they often refuse to pay child support. “Drama” is naturally a part of male-female relations. Many are addicted to drugs or alcohol, compounding their irresponsibility. Men are highly violent, viewing any perceived injury to their honor as a reason to start a fight; lower-class black and Hispanic men (stereotypically, remember) join gangs, and all lower-class people have several family members in jail. Lower-class people rarely live to old age, as they often die of preventable diseases or violence.
I viewed lower-class people this way until I myself sunk into poverty, joblessness, and ignominy. A lot of the stereotypical characteristics of the lower-class are accurate or at least have some bearing in truth, but the environment in which one is raised has a lot to do with the “freedom” of their choices.
There is also a fear among other class's that the hordes of lower classes will invade their neighbourhoods that has been long standing. Fact is many of us can through bad luck end up on a downward spiral.
Obviously folk on the bottom rungs of society are prone to issues that go with the territory. Unemployment. Forced to downgrade to cheaper housing in unsavoury areas. Kids become involved with gangs either to survive on the streets or to be part of something. The humiliation and anger. The fear and contempt held by others in society.
Some folk meet the stero type others don't. But with the way things are developing there looks like many more are going to become members of this so termed lower class through little fault of their own....

How can this happen to a city in the UK? These are the 10 poorest British parliamentary constituencies =
1) Glasgow Shettleston
2) Glasgow Springburn
3) Glasgow Maryhill
4) Birmingham Ladywood
5) Manchester Central
6) Camberwell and Peckham London
7) Glasgow Baillieston
8) Liverpool Riverside
9) Hackney South/Shoreditch London
10) Bethnal Green and Bow London
Nearly half of them are in Glasgow alone. In parts of Glasgow the life expectancy is only 54.
So is this the peoples fault they live in these dumps? I doubt it. Living in areas like these you can understand the sense of hopelessness, living in dumps in the outskirts away from all the upstanding members of society.
