I've been to Hong Kong, Chicago, NYC, Tokyo, and Toronto and NYC definitely has the best skyline.
NYC's skyline is amazing (especially if you ever get to do a helicopter tour)

Emporis.com ranks city skylines based on the visual impact of the buildings, by assigning more points to taller buildings. The have detailed information on all of the world's skyscrapers.
Hong Kong 123,606
New York City 37,009
Seoul 16,560
Chicago 16,475
Singapore 15,322
São Paulo 14,476
Shanghai 13,715
Tokyo 12,010
Bangkok 11,923
In my opinion, Hong Kong and Chicago are the only cities with large (and NICE) skylines.

Yes, its a weighted based on height. Here is their top ten based on number of buildings only:
Hong Kong 7,688
New York City 5,640
Seoul 2,873
Chicago 1,076
Singapore 3,965
São Paulo 5,223
Shanghai 948
Tokyo 2,770
Bangkok 754
Guangzhou 478
These five cities have the most buildings amongst the 200 tallest in the world:
Dubai 19
Hong Kong 16
New York City 16
Shanghai 13
Chicago 10
Here's one of my favorite Chicago shots, even though the buildings are hazy

Hong Kong's skyline shows how much energy is being wasted. It has no historic value. Chicago is nice but it could do better. I lived NYC all my life and if u think that only manhattan counts as NYC u must be MENTAL. And there are a lot of construction projects for tall buildings being built all around the city. The pictures that are out on the internet , face it u dont know if its up to date. So ill be visiting the an observatory at the top of rockefeller center and bring back breath taking pics of NYC

NYC from empire state building.

PS- Pictures are inaccurate and there are more taller buildngs than before

I think Shanghai's already impressive skyline, will be one of the world's best (or at least biggest) in 10-15 years.

The same with Auckland,New Zealand as well, their natural setting and unique buildings make up for the overall lack of buildings No where near the likes of Hong Kongs or NYC but good enough for small countires. I also voted for Hong Kong. Just a quick two photos before my movie starts.
Sydney
Auckland (more to the skyline than posted, some many different vantage points)

i think hong kong has the most dramatic skyline when you look at the contrast of buildings, mountains, harbor.
tokyo for its gritty urban density as far as you can see
Chicago for its height and variety of styles
dubai for ultra modern buildings. situating them most solely along Sheik Zayed Road creates a very dramatic setting.
New york's is very classic gothic/art deco cool, but it seems so familiar considering its in every movie and tv show.

Big deal.
All those tall boxes look more or less the same, with slight variations.
THIS, on another hand used to be one of the most gorgeous cities in the world with beautiful skyline, until those ugly boxes started moving in...

my opinion never stays the same, but i think Hong Kong and New York tie for #1 - experts can rank New york at third or 45th for all i care - i think its the worlds best along with Hong Kong. Chicago and Shanghai are on the same level for the number 2 spot for me

Hong Kong all the way!
I have been to all the cities, and frankly, NYC did impress me, but Hong Kong just blew my mind.
If you are lucky enough to go to the 88th floor of 2ifc on a clear day, with a perfect sunset, Hong Kong certainly will sway your mind. The lush mountain backdrop, added with the thousands of skyscrapers laid before you is absolutely fabulous.
New York is sort of nice, if you are looking from, say the Empire State or Rockefeller Center, but it's more like a concrete jungle than anything else, that sort of hides the potential beauty of NYC.
