The first theme of this, the Five largest States.

How about the smallest? The world’s Smallest Republic is Nauru. It’s a tiny dot with less than 10,000 people in the pacific ocean North West of New Guinea.
It was controlled by Australia, invaded by the Japanese, invaded by Australia again to get rid of the Japanese, handed over to the UN, gained independence , developed a large phosphate mining industry, become a clearing house for the Russian mafia when the phosphate ran out, and finally became a processing centre for refugees seeking asylum in Australia.
It’s got a very lively and interesting modern history for such a small place.

From the dozens of the smallest countries in the world four are located in Europe, three - in the Oceania region, two in the Caribbean sea and one in Asia. Four countries lie on the continent, and three of them are landlocked; six are located on the Islands.

Most people believe wrongly that the Holy See is,with only 0,5 sqkm, the smallest country in the world, but it's false, because the Holy See consists not only of Vatican city inside Rome but include also two large properties outside Rome, the Castelgandolfo Palace and its immense gardens (summer residence of the Popes) and the 3sq km Sta Maria Galeria estate, where the technical facilities of Radio Vatican are located, not to mention the Catacombs and various buildings and estates inside Rome. So I calculated that the Holy See as a whole must be 4 sqkm, the double of the Principality of Monaco, which is, with 2 sqkm, indeed the smallest "country" in the world .

The building and attractions officially belongs to the Vatican?
yes, they have "extraterritorial status" from the Italian state (like an embassy for instance) and fly the yellow-white Holy see flag. They are therefore under the jurisdiction of the Vatican.
