I did check. The leopard was found in southern Russia near the Black Sea at one point, but not that far into Europe.

Until the 1970, the Caspian tiger could be found in Central Asia.

I mean lions were found in much of Europe. They were found in Greece and the Balkans in Roman times. Most of the lions and tigers the Romans used for their gladiatorial combat came from the Middle East and Southern Europe.

And Northern Africa, where the Barbary lion lived. The Atlas bear, Africa's only indigenous bear in modern times, also survived there until the 18th or 19th century.

The barbary ape is the only species of monkey found in Europe(in Gibraltar).

There are now 21 sovereign countries which have shorelines on the Mediterranean Sea. Not counting entities like Gibraltar and Palestine.

I think the world's most populous island that is surrounded by fresh water is Montreal. Exceeding the population of Manhattan Island, if you wish to argue that that is surrounded by fresh water.

Sorry another typo, Northern Africa not Europe. The Atlas bear was Africa's only bear.

Darwin in the Northern Territory (Australia) is almost exactly the same distance from Manilla (Philipines) as it is from Sydney (Sydney being 36 miles closer).

Darwin is also closer to Davao city in the Southern Philippines than Sydney is to Auckland (NZ).
