Some people here have family that moved down south, but it's usually to the Carolinas or Florida. Or somewhere in the coastal south. Further inland is rather off people's radar. In college and in cities, I've met a number of people who've moved from the Great Lakes region, not so much the south. And many people are familiar with the west coast

Houston is the twelfth ranked city that is visited by international visitors in the US - so apparently plenty of people outside the US know SOMETHING about Houston, whether some people on CD do or not.

If we're swapping personal anecdotes, I literally don't know ANYONE who has moved to the northeast or midwest, though I do know lots of people who have moved from those areas. I only know a handful of people who have moved west of Texas. I know TONS of people who have moved south to places like Arkansas, Texas, Georgia, NC and Virginia.

Of course, that proves nothing but it's my personal experience.

KathrynAragon is the one Houston Homer tryingto defend her city against the onslaught of foreigners who don't care about Houston and don't view it as an international city. Futile battle really, if the foreigners haven't heard of it then it must not be so international after all.

How many people would visit if it wasn't an oil hub? 100? And why would anyone? Who would want to visit a 6 million suburbia filled with redneck Texans?

Okay, now you're showing your ignorance, and this is where I draw my line. I had agreed with some of the foreign posters up to a point, but Houston is NOT a redneck city. Houston attracts Americans from all over the country, so it is a very blended city. The oil industry is the main attraction, yes, but Houston is also nationally renowned for their health care and amazing hospitals. A city does not grow to 6 million people based on the oil industry alone, Houston is much more diverse than Detroit from the 1960's was, the two are not the same.

Texas is like anywhere else, you have your bright hard working and honest people and then you have the typical stereotype. What you're thinking of is the rural small town Texan, many of them are not attracted to Houston because it is too big and cosmopolitan for their small town life. Really, do not call it " suburbia fill with redneck Texans", especially if you haven't visited there, you know absolutely nothing.

Yeah, it pretty much seems like a business city dependent on oil money with some additional people visiting their relatives in the Estados Unidos.
But then, what's wrong about that? I'm sure you can live a wonderful life in that city. But trying to sell it as a top international travel destination? That's a bit far-fetched. It pretty much shares the fate of Frankfurt and some of the bigger Chinese cities no one ever heard about.

Redneck is not a stereotype I would attach to Houston but you're just bashing for its own sake. It's the first large US city with an openly gay mayor. Its suburbs are more socially conservative, but redneck is a dumb descriptor, and they're too affluent anyway. Whites are a minority in Houston, usually black or hispanics are not called rednecks.

LOL I don't even live in or near Houston. I just appreciate the good qualities about Houston - and for the record, I've traveled a lot in my life and been to many large, international cities so I do think I'm able to discern both positives and negatives of a wide range of places.

Like I've pointed out over and over and over again (though some people can't seem to grasp this very simple fact), Houston is the 12th most popular city in the US for international travelers. So apparently there are many people outside the US who HAVE heard of Houston and who visit there.
