News, France to rejoin NATO after 40 years -- 'good move,' says analyst.
A national defense expert and Pentagon advisor says France's recent decision to rejoin NATO's military command after a 40-year absence is a "move in the right direction."
Since taking office, France's new president Nicholas Sarkozy has placed a strong emphasis on improving his country's relations with the United States. The new French leader also declared recently that he would soon undertake "very strong" initiatives on European defense including "its full place" in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
Lt. Col. Bob Maginnis (USA-Ret.) says even before Sarkozy became president, the French had been cooperating behind the scenes in places like Iraq and Afghanistan. And the plan to rejoin NATO, he believes, is good news.
