That is every developed/wealthy country on earth.

Sorry but Russia should be #1. Whoever said USA does not know what they are talking about. A lot of Americans are happy with a solid middle class lifestyle.

Some of the most materialistic countries are countries that were doing bad economically in the past and now have "new wealth", mostly 3rd world countries in the Middle East, South America and countries that go from Communism to Capitalism

Here in the USA, we have had wealth and a high standard of living for many years

I could not find many differences between the Brits and the Aussies when i lived in england, although the brits don't seem to have as much of a tall poppy syndrome like aussies do.
What?

I agree that most people and cultures have a tendency towards materialism if given the chance, it does seem more rampant in recently capitalist and/or wealthy countries.

I find Singapore to be very materialistic, people are always judging others on their job, car, country club memberships and the like, I think it's in part due to the the rather insecure nature of a geographically small nation, as well as the wide wealth disparities across society which lead to an even greater emphasis on money and it's use as a label for success.

I actually happened to be visiting in 2000 when McDonald's were offering a promotion where you'd get a free Hello Kitty toy with each meal purchased. The number of people waiting in line to get one of these toys was unbelievable, at one particular point in time 300,000 (8% of the population) were at a McDonald's store.

Here in the USA, some of the most materialistic people in my opinion are newly arrived immigrants from 3rd World countries. They bring these Third World values to our country not realizing that most people here don't care who you are, what you drive and where you live.

Maybe in back-o-beyond they don't care. Where you live for example.

Ah, what would a comment from dunno what to put here be without the charming trademark of pompous ineptitude?

Please, feel free to tell us some more about Des Moines, Iowa. For that matter, tell us all something about Oregon, Idaho, Colorado, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Maine. Only through your armored wisdom and general worldliness will we Americans in the world of "back-o-beyond" come to understand our arrested development.

More, more!

I agree there, I have seen it myself, it's hard to believe how materialist people are down there, after all those are Muslim countries. Even kids run around wearing luxury watches and clothes.
